I was at the point where I was ready to leave my house because I couldn't get the bugs to leave. I bought all the stuff on the internet thinking I could do it myself I stayed up at night with flashlight in one hand and bug spray in the other hand and battled the bugs. I would finally fall asleep from exhaustion. And of course the next night I would do the same thing. I thought heating them out would be the best solution. Then I interviewed bed bug Solutions. They seemed so confident about getting rid of the bugs that I was only too excited to hire them. I cannot explain how wonderful I feel now that they have eradicated the bugs the itching the worry. It has been 4 weeks now and I'm slowly getting my mind back. I really hadn't realized how much they consumed me my mind my self-esteem my happiness everything has come back. Even bed bug Solutions came back after 3 weeks to check on everything for good measure. There's not enough room to say how grateful I am to this company. What a great family. If you have bed bugs don't call anybody else don't waste the time get bed bug Solutions in there and you'll get your bed and mind. back.

My daughter woke up was petrified to find sores on her arm which looked like bed bug bites. At this point, we are 3 weeks from moving out of our house into 3 separate locations. Being extremely concerned, we called several pest companies. One of the companies offered a heater rental without even investigating anything. Eddie from Jenkin's Pest Solutions was much different. I spoke with him on the phone several times and obtained a very reasonable quote assuming we did have bed bugs. He rearranged his schedule to come and do an inspection the same night because of the pending move. He did a thorough inspection of our property and found absolutely no trace of bed bugs. In our situation, he could have said we needed a treatment and we would have absolutely done it immediately, but he didn't. Eddie is an extremely honest guy who does a great job. He also wasn't going to charge us a service fee, but we insisted. He is one of the best service people we have used. Highly recommended.

We have a home in our rental community that had been sitting vacant for about 4 months. When we went in to clean and remodel we found evidence of bedbugs. After calling, Mr. Carroll came out the same day and did a thorough inspection. We then discussed the best approach to tackling the problem. He came out once a week for 3 weeks treating the home and reporting on the outcome each time. He was very professional and knowledgeable in the treatment of bed bugs. I would definitely use his services again if need be.

Art and his team were great. They provided a solid level of information about the Bed Bugs and what we were dealing with. They also were able to schedule quickly and were right on time with all the appointments made. We had our heat treatment done yesterday, so we're hoping the little devils are gone for good. They did great work.

Two years ago, I had an outbreak of spider mites on my 15 arbovitae trees, and I tried to treat it myself with miticide purchased from hardware stores. Because I was not successful in killing them off, my trees began to turn a copper-yellow and looked horrible. I was afraid of losing the trees (which are 7 years old and about 12-15 feet tall). This spring, I found Ziehler on the internet and hired them to take care of the spider mites. Their arborist was professional, friendly, and very helpful in explaining what the treatments were and how they would help. The cost is extremely reasonable, and after two treatments my trees began to recover. They are green again and look great! I was so impressed with their Tree service that I decided to hire their lawncare service as well. I highly recommend them!!!

My husband saw a few bites on him over the course of a couple of weeks, having experienced a problem with bedbugs before we panicked. We tried almost every home remedy to no avail so decided to hire a professional. We were so discouraged due to the pricing of a lot of the companies but then we found The Bug Man on Thumbtack. Traey actually took the time to walk me through his whole process and explain to me in detail how to inspect my apartment. I expected less effort since his price was so low but was pleasantly surprised that he took his time and did a through inspection and treatment of my place. At the end of the day he didn't find any evidence of bedbugs and even left a can of his product in the event they are in one of our vehicles. I will say that I was a little discouraged about him not finding them but he did a pretty detailed inspection. I have been bit once since he has been at our place but he did say that it was a possibility to see bites until they die off. I have already recommended him to a friend and left his card with my rental office. It really does appear that he cares about people and truly wants to help.

Unfortunately, I had bed bugs brought into my house. At that time, I googled bed bugs and found a local independently owned company based out of Grove City. Once I called them, they scheduled the appointment with me and was out very quickly to help take care of my issue. Prior to arriving to treat my house, they had sent me an email on how to prepare my house and belongings. This was extremely helpful and allowed the treatment to be more successful and smooth. At the time of the scheduled appointment, the exterminator (Jason), was extremely knowledgeable and courteous. Unfortunately, one bed bug was spotted 4 months later, and Dsicreet Bed Bugs and Pest Control, stood by their 6 month Guarantee and sprayed my house again without out charging me. Also, when they arrived, their trucks were unmarked from having their name on them due to being Discreet and keeping the matter private. Not only that, they were almost half the cost of the commercial companies out there, plus I would rather deal with a small private and professional company. I would highly recommend Discreet Bed Bug and Pest Control to anyone that may have the same issue I had due to my experience. Steve M. - Columbus, OH

As I worked through how to deal with my bed bug problem, I probably called Glen six times with question - he was always pleasant, patient, and helpful. They came the next day - all were professional and got to work right away. They made my situation which I thought was horrible, into a tolerable and satisfying experience

We had a rather difficult problem with bed bugs and first called another pest control company for remedy. After multiple attempts with no success we called Torco for help. They responded promptly and professionally. They were very careful and curtious during the process and totally took care of our problem. Was so pleased with their work.

I would definitely use Eco-Therm again if I needed this type of service again. Brian is honest, caring, dependable, and did exactly what he told me he was going to do and actually he did more. He is very knowledgeable about his service, explains the whole process completely, and patiently answers all questions. He was careful with my household items and worked around my schedule. He is professional and very aware of the fact that a person might not want the whole neighborhood knowing your household is being treated for bedbugs. I would recommend him wholeheartedly.

We recently had our entire house ,'de-bed-bugged' as the result of many months of not having the money for professional treatment. We used over-the-counter stuff but it barely helped, so, things gradually got worse and worse. Once we were in a better position to get professional help, I found someone on Thumbtack. Although he, too, could have solved the problem, he told us about Shawn and Lisa's heat treatment just to give us another option. (Apparently, they refer clients back and forth sometimes depending on the job; so, I actually did not hire them directly from Thumbtack because they did not know about it yet.) Anyway, we decided on the heat treatment so we called them. During the several hours it took to do the task, I got to know this VERY nice couple (and their sweet daughter) and asked alot of questions about the different kinds of treatments available. While I admit that I am not an expert, I believed them when they said that not all heat treatments are as effective as others--it's all about how much power the heaters have because the heat has to get high enough to go behind walls and into lots of tight spaces (like pages in books). They explained that some heaters just can't do the job--BUT THEIRS DID!! However, good equipment is just part of it...this family put in a LOT of physical labor moving things around periodically. Our bedbugs DID NOT STAND A CHANCE!! I would also like to say that, although I'm sure Shawn and Lisa need to put food on the table like everyone else, they said they keep their price down so more people can get relief from these ANNOYING bugs. And that seems to be where they get the most satisfaction--from helping people. So, I HIGHLY recommend them!!! My husband and I feel like we finally have freedom to live normally in our own home again.-- FROM TWO VERY SATISFIED CUSTOMERS

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you get bed bugs and how do you get rid of them?

The increase in bed bug infestations in the U.S. is a result of increased travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices, explains the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It’s easy to mistake bed bugs for carpet beetles or similar-looking bugs, so infestations are often not noticed when they first occur. Prevention tips include keeping areas free of clutter, regularly washing sheets and mattress covers in hot water (and don’t forget to wash the laundry bag, too), and vacuuming regularly and safely disposing of the sealed vacuum bag. Not everyone has reactions to bed bug bites, which also may be mistaken for the bites of other pests such as mosquitoes, so timely bed bug extermination depends on identification of bed bug activity. If you notice physical signs of an infestation, contact a bed bug extermination professional as soon as possible to learn about chemical and non-chemical (such as heat) treatment options. An integrated pest management plan may incorporate one or more methods.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.

Can you see a bed bug?

Bed bugs are visible to the naked eye, but depending on where they are in their life cycle they can be hard to see. Adult bed bugs are the easiest to spot. According to the EPA, they are roughly the size of an apple seed and the height of a credit card. Adults are flat and oval-shaped, have six legs, and are rusty red in color. Bed bug larvae, also referred to as nymphs, are white-yellow or translucent in color and are much harder to spot due to their small size. The nymphs go through five stages of life, shedding an exoskeleton at each stage. Throughout these stages the nymphs grow in size from approximately 1.5 millimeters to approximately 4.5 millimeters. Bed bug eggs can be the most challenging to see as they are roughly 1 millimeter — about the size of a pinhead — and are white or clear. Bed bugs tend to be more active at night, as this is when they feed.

How do you get bed bugs?

Bed bugs can happen to anybody and there typically more than 200,000 cases in the U.S. per year. They are sneaky little pests that hitchhike into your home in a variety of ways. Getting a bed bug infestation is not a reflection on how clean a home is; bed bugs can infiltrate the cleanest of places — although their presence is easier to detect and eliminate in clutter-free spaces. Here are some tips from the EPA to prevent bed bugs from entering and taking up residence in your home:

      • Carefully inspect secondhand furniture, beds, or couches for any signs of bed bug infestation before bringing them home.
      • Use a protective cover (encasement) over mattresses and box springs to prevent bed bugs from hiding in them. Select an encasement in a light color to make bed bug spotting easier. Also choose one of a strong material that won’t tear, and check it often for holes.
      • Keep your home clutter-free to eliminate bed bug hiding spots.
      • Vacuum your home regularly and dispose of sealed vacuum bags carefully.
      • Shared laundry facilities can lead to bed bug exposure in both directions. Transport laundry in plastic bags (if you have an active infestation, use a new bag for the journey home). Remove laundry from the dryer directly into the bag and fold it at home. Use high heat to kill any potential bed bugs.
      • The EPA suggests that if you live in a multi-family home, isolate your unit by:
        • Installing door sweeps on the bottom of doors to discourage movement into hallways.
        • Sealing cracks and crevices around baseboards, light sockets, etc., to discourage movement through wall voids.

How long does a bed bug treatment last?

Bed bug extermination can last forever as long as the treatment killed all the bed bugs (and their eggs) and if new bed bugs are not transported into the location. Factors that can affect the outcome are how severe the infestation is and whether all bed bug sources were properly identified and treated. When working with a pest control professional, the EPA recommends you check and call references; ask if they offer both chemical and non-chemical treatment options, if they recommend both encasements and interceptors, and if they offer two or more service visits and follow-up. Bed bugs are tiny (adults are roughly the size of an apple seed) and can hide anywhere a credit card can slide into. They squeeze into cracks in walls, behind electrical outlet sockets, in bedding, and in other dark places. Learn how to prepare your home for a bed bug treatment for the best outcomes. Michigan State University shares some examples of possible reasons that a bed bug extermination is not 100 percent effective:

      • Not all sources (aka hiding places) of the bed bugs were identified during initial inspection.
      • Not all sources of bed bugs were treated.
      • The insecticides used were not effective or, in the case of heat treatment, there was insufficient contact time.
      • Infested items such as bedding or other materials were reintroduced into a cleaned area.
