"Our home was flooded with water and the damage was tremendous. It happened from a pipe blowing off its cap from a very poor plumber's work who forgot to cinch the sleeve against the cap and stem in our upstairs bathroom wall's water pipe. We were lucky one of us was home to turn off the major water valve in the house. Kaphar came out immediately at an extremely late hour as soon as they heard about our incident. They came the same night it happened and were at our house within 20 minutes. They found the problem in the wall in about 5 minutes! The Kaphar professional that came that night was Chase Holmes. From that point forward our home was in great hands with the owner Charles, Chase and many wonderful team members doing quick demolition and water mitigation with sophisticated moisture review and analysis until everything was dry and ready for repair. The damage was extensive from several upstairs rooms to major portions of the downstairs. We even had structural issues caused from water soaking an area upstairs which made the heavily weighed section of our home sag down about 6 to 8 inches! The whole section had to be torn down and rebuilt. It's perfect! The repairs are impeccable, the team members experts in their field of construction work and all of them were very polite, considerate and professional. Kaphar was quick to take care of our home, and they also made sure to contact us and visit our home at least once a day if not two or more times a day. Their communication was clear, next steps were explained and planned WITH US throughout the whole process and the ATTENTION TO DETAIL made our home look brand new - it's 1,000 times better than when we bought it new! And the best part is they SHOWED UP WHEN they said they would, did EXACTLY what they said they would, worked above and beyond taking EXTRA STEPS to fix what needed to be fixed including correcting a different contractors poor workmanship from repairs made when our home was damaged from the 2013 tornado. They hauled off the damaged, unused materials, cleaned up everyday, and hired a professional cleaner several times throughout the process to keep our home clean and tidy while under construction. They worked with our insurance company on our behalf ensuring that all parties were treated FAIRLY AND EQUITABLY and satisfactorily. It was very comforting to have Kaphar by our side during this disaster. They gave us advice, offered options and kept us informed, and all along the way they educated us about what they were doing and why they were doing it. They provided an exceptional customer service experience, gave us quick responses to our questions or concerns, included us in decisions in every step and we TRUSTED them implicitly. We cannot express our GRATITUDE enough. We had someone care for our home, treating it as if it was their own in Kaphar. We highly recommend Kaphar, they are a very dependable and reputable firm. Their work is superior to ANY other contractor we have worked with - and unfortunately for us we've needed major repairs much too often. No one else will EVER touch our home again, Kaphar has us as life-long customers! Trust us, when you need help fixing your property after a major incident call Kaphar. You will be ecstatic about their service and so pleased with the exquisite end results from their work. We are expressing our gratefulness for them and giving them the highest praise and scores possible. We would give them 10 stars if that was an option. We hope you never have a disaster like this in your home but if you do choose to hire Kaphar. We are so happy! Kaphar is a top-notch company."

"Many reasons why I hired Brian Gilleys & why you should too. Brian did an Amazing job on our Fascia & Soffit repair. He went above & beyond & repaired a few other different issues I had with no extra charge just the care of being a personable person who loves doing what he does. Brian was VERY VERY reasonable in his estimate & never hesitated or tried to up sell me. It was a HUGE relief to feel the honesty & fairness he gave me especially already having a couple estimates prior to Brian's which was greatly "bank breaking" more. When I first met Brian the same day I called him, he was VERY easy to talk to & he listened to what my concerns were & what I knew needed to be addressed other than him telling me what he thought like the other companies did. Brian did the job in 2 days where I was told by the other companies (with multiple workers) it would take 5 to 7 days maybe longer & Brian works by himself. He even cut down & cleaned up all the trash even after I said we would take care of it. Brian is not limited to just roofing jobs he can do your Whole House! I've already hired him to do an extended back deck with roof, renovate both of my bathrooms, the kitchen & replace the rug throughout the house. I'm extremely excited to have met such an honest hardworking carpenter/handyman. Brian is hired for life with the Kala Ohana! Mahalo a nui loa Brian. "

"Needed front and back porch roofs rebuild. Weather was breaking down the materials and porch roofs were falling down. Dangerous and unpredictable. Brian gave written statement on the cost of both porch roofs repairs Advised once the project was started it would only take about 10 days. The original roofs were flat causing the damage. He advised he would make the front porch in an A-frame porch and would have to cut the existing poles on the back porch down a little in order to "slant" the roof so as the rain would run off hence saving the roof from weather damage. Once Brian and his crew-Loc and Creed- started on the front porch, they had it removed in one day. What progress!!! Upon completion of the front porch , it was off to the back porch. It was more damaged than the front porch!! When they were able to remove the materials and decide on the best route to go, I decided to inquire about extending the back porch another 8 x 12 feet. Brian did not hesitate once and said that there were be no problem with the extension and after agreeing on a price, which was very reasonable, I agreed to have it done. When he was ready to shingle the porch roof, he noticed there were some shingles missing from the main part of the house. He replaced them without hesitation, which I was very grateful for. Brian and his crew worked very hard everyday which I then in turn treated them with a home cooked lunch every day they were here. Upon completion of the porch roofs and the porch extension, they completed small repairs around the house as well. Brian installed new front porch lights as well as hanging up my porch swing . He had to build and replace some of the banisters/railings and even built another set of steps for the porch extension (which I absolutely love) !! When there is a need for his assistance I will not hesitate to call upon him again. Which will be in near future for other repairs, rebuilds, or replacements. Brian and his crew works very hard and are excellent. Would recommend him any time to anyone-which I already have. Thank you Brian's Remodeling--love love my new porches."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
