Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

I needed a professional-looking headshot super-fast. He came out that week and rescued my professional online presence with an amazing photo, going above and beyond to get the job done! He was quick with his communications prior to meeting, on-time, expertly professional, creative, and skilled. Although I'm not comfortable sitting for photos, he was friendly and helpful in navigating poses to get the perfect shot. I really needed something captivating yet quick. Goal surpassed! Hire him.

My wife and I knew that we wanted photos to commemorate our wedding, but we also knew that what we were looking for was less traditional. Additionally, neither of us had experience with professional photographers before, so we were a little nervous (but excited!). Katharine made us feel very comfortable and helped create a very memorable experience. We are definitely looking forward to working with her in the future and would absolutely recommend her services to anyone looking for outstanding photos!

Jason was very professional and creative. He let me choose the area (it was quite the adventure to get to our destination) and captured the moments and message I was seeking for my business. He also went the extra mile by editing some of my photos for my marketing ideas. He went above and beyond. I have referred him to my professional friends seeking headshots and I will be using him for my home photos for my future listings. Thanks Jason!

Yvette was very professional. She asked were I would want to go to take the photos . I left that up to her and we went down on the waterfront. I would recommend others to her. I'll go back to her again.

I first connected with Tyler when I went online searching for a photographer to take pictures of our extended family, a group of twenty one, with several young children. Tyler was very responsive & easy to communicate with regarding my questions and concerns. I really appreciated the relaxed, but professional, way he worked with us all. We all are very happy with the quality of his work and would recommend him to friends. I look forward to many more family photos by Tyler.

We met a true artist when we requested a photo session with Patrick Smith. He was able to work us in for a family portrait on a Saturday afternoon before we had to catch a flight back to our respective homes. We are most appreciative to him for accommodating us. He is very courteous, professional and made each member of our family feel very comfortable. His work is outstanding with exceptional quality. We cannot wait to get it framed.

On Friday, October 3, 2013, I had the pleasure of working with Aaron Ziesemer, who of course, found me on this website after I had placed an advertisement to have a few professional snapshots taken for my acting portfolio; a task of which, my agent requires me to do once per year. Thankfully for me, I know my way around photography well enough to have done my own photography on my own for the last 6 years - not to mention, having some very nice equipment to boot. In addition, I also own all the necessary professional photo editing software along with the knowledge to work my way around them, to have been able to take care of this myself for the past 5+ years. However, what I do not possess is the time nor the patience (not to mention, the professionalism) that people out there like Aaron Ziesemer has instinctively. So, for the first time in 6 years, I decided to place an advertisement on Thumbtack. Within a matter of minutes, Aaron responded. And at first, I thought that maybe this wasn’t a good sign; nevertheless it ended up being that of his quick response and his attitude over the phone, is exactly why I decided to stick with him. And boy am I glad I did! Even though at the time of this writing (October 8, 2013) I have yet to receive my prints back (which I might add, was a request that I had made personally. Actually, he had originally told me that he could have them back to me by Monday of the following week. However, since I was in no immediate rush, I just told him to wait a few weeks. (Update: 2 days ago, on October 9th only one day after having typed up this review, I received a few links where I could go view my photos. Nevertheless, I have yet to look at them [even though it is now the 11th] purposely, because not only do I have faith that they turned out well, but even if for some reason they hadn’t, I would not let it affect what I wrote up here yet hadn’t yet had time to proofread it or even have uploaded it, so that is why the remainder of this letter focuses on him as a photographer). I was originally struck by (what appeared to be) Arron’s much younger age; that is, in comparison to my “elderly” age of a ripe old 36 This and his boyish good-looks, had made me a bit worried that perhaps he would not only lack in experience, but that this feature was perhaps his “selling point.” And while it may be for some women (or men?) out there, it certainly wasn’t for me. This apprehension lasted a whole 2 minutes (at best) before I quickly realized that Aaron was not quite as young as I had previously assumed. Nonetheless, by this time, I (quite honestly) he could have been 12 years of age and I still would’ve been just as impressed as well as equally confident in his abilities. The bottom line is that if you are looking for a very skilled, inexpensive and great photographer, Mr. Ziesemer is the real deal.
