Introduction: As a tutor, I bring proficiency, patience, a positive and personable attitude, and experience.
I completed my M.S. in civil engineering at Portland State University in December 2020. Through my graduate coursework and research, I have focused on applied mathematics and statistics, numerical modelling, and machine learning. Also, I have taught two 300-level engineering lab courses at Portland State University.
Previously, I worked as a peer mentor and math tutor at Clackamas Community College for two years (2014-2016). During that time, I worked with students to develop their mathematical skills and understanding in classes ranging from basic arithmetic to calculus. Most of the tutoring was done on a one-to-one basis, but I also lead study groups for some classes. I received training through the college, including weekly sessions with math faculty and other educators covering tutoring techniques, reviewing challenges and experiences in our work, and discussing methods of improving the learning experiences of our students.
I find helping students to grow in their mathematical understanding and become more successful in their classes to be extremely rewarding and fulfilling. I enjoy interacting with people, especially when I have a chance to help them grow. I enjoy working on math with people, but tutoring is bigger than math. It’s also about helping a student to be successful in their education generally, obtain life skills, and live successful lives. Playing a role in helping someone take pride in their work and accomplishments is truly a blessing.
