Glenn installed a bamboo wood floor in our 1950's home. The floor is beautiful. Glenn is very knowledgeable about home repairs and was inventive when we had to adjust for some older home issues. I would definitely use Glenn again for home repair issues.

Zeev promptly responded to my request within 2 hours for plumbing repair on a leaky pipe under my sink. He exceeded my expectations by arriving later in the day and fixed the leaking! Zeev went out of his way to go to Ace Hardware to pick up a part that would fix my issue. I highly recommend Zeev for any plumbing needs!

I hired Eliseo to repair the drywall ceiling in our living room. It was a difficult patch as he had to match the knock-down texture exactly, and it was in a very visible area right above the dining table. His work came out great, the patch would not be noticeable to anyone who did not know exactly where to look. He was easy to arrange the project with, came on time and got the project done in one visit. H left the room completely clean, which on a dusty drywall project is a challenge! I would recommend him.

Westcoast Windows, Doors and More replaced a fogged up dining room window panel in '15. So in '18 I asked them to return to replace two more panels in the same dining room window that had cracked. They provide a solid upfront bid, come at the scheduled time, do excellent repair work of wood windows and clean up so that one can't tell they were there that day. I'd recommend them in a heartbeat to anyone who needs windows repaired. I expect a lot from home repair professionals and they have consistently lived up to my expectations. They are like the old school craftsmen who take the time to prepare the wood, the glass and make everything just right for their customer. Truly a breath of fresh air when one needs it for window repairs. Bob Aungier, Lake Oswego

Daniel responded to my request to replace an interior door. When he arrived to consult on the job he advised me that I only needed a repair which he could do immediately, which he did. I will be calling him for future internal house repairs which I have planned.

We were very pleased to get a plumber to our home to repair a leaky toilet within a day and a half! The other plumbers I contacted were 3 weeks out. These guys responded the same day and came ASAP. Took care of our toilet in 15 minutes. Very professional and easy to work with.

Vince was excellent. Not only did he explain how the current wiring was not up to code and would likely cause a fire (old junction box was melted and dangling), but he recommended the most cost-effective method of fixing it and repaired everything to safe standards. He then gave a detailed explanation of how our kitchen was wired and recommended which lighting fixture and switches to buy. I would highly recommend Vince to anyone without hesitation.

Great attitude and advices. Lloyd was able to repair my fence, not replace it like everyone else wanted to do. He showed up on time and finished on time. It was great to have him work on my house.

His is very responsive and reliable. I trust the quality of his work. I have continued to hire him for several other projects like repairing my deck and extending my gutter system. I am giving Eric 5 stars for an exterior house painting job. My house was built in 1948 with lots of detail and issues that needed repair and attention. His bid was not the lowest, but he was the most knowledgeable. He has an excellent eye for the smallest detail and addressed them all, even some dry rot. He has good general knowledge of general contracting in addition to wonderful painting skills. He was on the job every day and his helpers were excellent. I am completely happy with Eric's job. The house looks great and everything was well cleaned up. Yup...5 stars!

Miguel Hernandez has done a tremendous amount of work for Lents Baptist Church. We still own the parsonage in the expectation that we would someday use it for church activities. The day has not come. In the interim we rent the house out. The house is a four bedroom two bath house. The last renter caused a lot of damage to the house. Miguel was right there to take on the responsibility and work of repairing the house. He washed all the walls, ceilings and floors. He repaired holes in the walls. Then he primed the walls and ceilings. Then he painted them. The floors in the main living areas are hardwood and he sanded, stained and sealed the floors. He laid tile in the bathrooms, kitchen and dining room. He replaced all the interior doors and the front door. New trim was installed between the walls and floor. We had water damage in the entry way to the church. Miguel repaired the walls and then painted the area. All his work was very good.

Duane fixed a roof leak at my home. I felt he was thorough in assessing the location of the leak and expert in his repair. At first glance it seemed to be a flashing issue but turned out to be a larger problem that Duane uncovered with his keen assessment and repair skills. He also worked expediently and diligently. I am very pleased with the result today. Excellent work!

I'm in the middle of a whole house remodel of my home. When we removed the existing shower, we discovered rotten sub flooring. I reached out to Vince Dolen and he responded quickly. He was at the house looking at the issues within a couple of hours. He arrived promptly, at the agreed upon time and completed the work quickly. Vince even anticipated the needs of my plumber. His rates are reasonable. The day after Vince completed the work, the plumber sang his praises , "that contractor was really good his framing for the tub and the tub rail are perfect!" I highly recommend Vince and will call on him for any other needs that arise. Nicely done Vince. Thank you!

He repaired the faucet leaks quickly and we ended up having him work on a couple of tricky electrical issues too. One issue ended up being tougher than we thought but he stuck with it until it was resolved. Great guy! We even have him scheduled to come back out later this week to move our dining room chandelier. Highly recommend Three Knights

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
