Adele, Thank you for choosing us, it was a pleasure to work with you.
Deck or Porch Remodel or Addition
We hired MJK to build a deck on which to place a hot tub. We also asked them to subcontract an electrician to wire the deck for the tub. Initially things went smoothly. We got an estimate from them quickly that was very competitive. Once the contract was signed, materials were delivered quickly and work was begun in a timely fashion. The deck was constructed well, but no sealant was applied to the boards, no weed barrier was placed, and trash was left around the site. When we asked about these things, we were told they were not included in our estimate and would cost extra (seems like finishing and weed barrier should be a standard part of building any deck). After agreeing to the extra cost, they then waited until the very last minute to seal the deck (days after agreed to), so it was still wet when the hot tub was delivered. They also did not seal both sides of the boards, and got oily sealant all over the surrounding landscape rocks. The weed barrier was hastily stapled in place with no regard for aesthetics. Once the deck was done and the hot tub installed, the electrician came out to assess the job and told us that MJK had not communicated the full scope of the project to him. He would need supplies and prep work that were not included in our estimate. MJK tried to pass on this additional $1,100 cost to us, which we declined to pay since there was no stipulation in our contract about cost variance. Ultimately the electric got done, though they again left the site littered with bits of wire and trash. There was also something of a language barrier with the owner which made communicating our needs a challenge. I would not hire them again or recommend them.Jul 21, 2018VerifiedMJK Construction LLC's reply
Hello Jennifer, I am sad to hear that you are not completely satisfied with your deck. The work was done based on our written agreement, and things like weed blocker and staining of decks, fences, trellises, pergolas etc. are considered extras and never done unless discussed and included in writing (staining deck boards on both sides is not standard practice) . The estimate clearly specified the work to be done, and we did just that, and all the extras as change orders. We had to work with weather , and around our schedule to meet your needs and we delivered everything you asked for. So sad to hear that you wouldn’t recommend us. Our reputation is very important to us, as most of our business is done by recommendation. We will be posting pictures of your project along with the estimate and the contract, and let people be the judge. We also hope that other people will have some good takeaways from this post before hiring a contractor for similar projects.
I needed a new sliding glass door which was complicated by the fact there was wood rot around the door. After picking out a door at Lowes they said the couldnt do it re the wood rot. Max found a comparable door with a competitive price. After removing the current door he was able to repair the wood rot and install the new door which I'm thrilled with.Apr 17, 2017
