Drum Lessons
ÃÂAre you a beginner without any direction? Are you unable to play what you want?
ÃÂTired of your hands feeling unbalanced? Forearms sore? Tense while playing?
ÃÂHaving trouble keeping up with fast tempos?
ÃÂIs your back chronically sore when sitting at the drums?
I can help you . . .
I can teach you to overcome these issues
To create balance :)
I begin by having a phone conversation with you where we can establish a sense of our compatibility, comfort level and direction.
I like working with beginners; a good teacher can help you get there faster.
Teaching you the METHOD, a uniquely simple approach, will help you concentrate on finger control, independence, speed, endurance and to perfect balance between your hands and feet, all in a relaxed manner.
Lessons are written expressly for the individual student!
You can look forward to learning a discipline and a philosophy and relaxed approach to the drums rather than styles of music and then you can take it wherever you want to go.
I also incorporate the "Moeller Method" taught to me by some very talented and dedicated drummer/percussionists. This is an approach to drumming using biomechanics and ergonomics to support smoother, injury-free playing.
Your own body will teach you how to accomplish this. Your speed and power will increase as well.
Having your own drums, sticks, (maybe a drum pad) and cymbals etc. is always a PLUS :) ... BUT NOT A REASON NO TO CONTACT ME!
WeÃÂll start by working on:
* Drum pads and a metronome, to perfect your inner rhythms and relaxing techniques.
* Mirrors, so you can self-monitor your hands and body mechanics comfort level, so you can easily correct your technique.
* By using mirrors one can create a visual approach that encourages concentration on the consistent, even sound of your sticks . . . bass drum pedal . . . and hi-hats pedal and posture.
My home/studio is my preferred place to teach. There I have a drum set, congas, several pads, pedals and mirrors.
Only people who are interested in learning and playing, . . . just a beginner? . . .All are welcome . . .(boy or girl / woman or man) . . . OR a working professional who would find this helpful for them, CONTACT ME, let's talk - can't hurt? . . . NO SOLICITING, PLEASE.
.
Teaching anyone who enjoys playing drums at any age to learn the proper way to play in a very relaxed manner.

Nick is an excellent drum teacher that loves to teach. It really shows in how he teaches me in every lesson. In our first lesson, we went over my goals and every lesson afterwards has been to reach that goal. His lesson recaps help a lot with retention as well. 10/10 would recommend!!

I am a busy Mom of two teens and work full-time, so the dream of playing drums had been set on the back burner for many years. When I finally decided it was time to set aside time for myself, I went searching Google and found Thumbtack. I sent email to two or three other drum teachers and Nick stood out immediately, with how flexible he was schedule wise. I needed Saturdays at a certain time and he was able to accommodate without hesitation. I was really looking forward to finding someone on the west side of Portland where I live but after communicating with Nick via email, I was sold. We setup an appointment for a lesson the following Saturday and thus began my drumming education.
Nick is a big man but his smile and his heart of gold will make anyone feel welcome. Each and every time I come for a lesson, he makes me feel like I am the only person that matters and his focus in on me from start to finish. He is very patient and has always allowed me time to adjust without making me feel pressured to perform. Nick encouraged me to bring in music that I wanted to learn and took the time to show me everything from setting up a drum kit to more advanced Afro-Cuban polyrhythms.
His deep wealth of knowledge in all types of music and the passion he shows for it, makes Nick very special. I would recommend Nick to anyone that is looking for a patient, knowledgeable practitioner in percussion and friend to be taught by.

My 7 1/2 year old daughter has been going to classes with Nick for a year now. He has been a wonderful teacher and patient, especially with such a young drumming student, and my daughter took to him right away.
Nick will also send a voice recording of the previous lesson to help my daughter remember for when she practices at home, which is quite helpful. He sends a reminder the day before her lesson and is very prompt to getting back with inquiries.
I would continue to recommend Nick to anyone who would like to learn how to drum at any age!

Nick has been giving my son (age 10) drum lessons for a year and a half. Nick has a great repartee with kids and his methods (reading sheets / playing along side) seem to really propel the learning experience. His personality in general is wonderful (friendly, cheerful, easy to work with). His studio is cozy but comfortable (separate waiting area for parents/sibs if desired) and the convenient location is a plus for our busy schedule.

Learning to play the drum set with Nick Saume has been nothing but a pleasure and a real sure way to get started on the kit.
As a 60 year old student, with some previous musical experience (not the trap set), Nick was able to quickly assess my abilities and deficits and prescribe a regimen of exercises, grooves and technique that got me started on my way. In 7 months of study with Nick, I am surprised at how much I've learned and been able to execute in that short amount of time.
Nick covers all the bases in a relaxed and friendly manner. No high pressure here! Above all, he is patient when I am confused or trying to figure out certain problems I might be having. A quick explanation or demo is usually all it takes to solve the problem. Beyond that, Nick has an uncanny way of addressing these issues in a way that they almost solve themselves. It's obvious that he is aware of the different learning styles his students may have, and adapts his lessons and approach to accommodate those differences.
If this isn't good enough, Nick always sends a post lesson recording that reviews all the material covered! The student is assured of not forgetting any material that was covered in the lesson and has recorded examples for practice at home at his or her disposal. This is such a bonus!
Beginner, intermediate, or experienced players could all benefit study with Nick. He is an excellent jazz drummer (go check him out some time), and has a lot of experience and appreciation for all styles of music from Rock, Jazz, Blues, R&B, Funk and Latin grooves.
It's obvious that Nick takes a lot of pleasure in his teaching and seeing his students make progress and fall in love with the art and the instrument. GREAT PLAYER, GREAT TEACHER, GREAT PERSON!
