We had THE Bobby Brown DJ our party, and had an amazing time! We had music videos on the wall with a projector, and it really made it a good time. He even told us to send in requests!

As a vocalist in a worship band I wanted to improve my voice so I joined Sofia's lessons a year ago. My voice became definitely more stable after a couple of months and she helped me to discover my real register. Besides practicing scales she recommended me songs from different styles which I'd not thought before that I could ever sing. She gave me useful instructions how to perform. Because of her sensitivity she found the best personal examples for me. It was really a pleasure to take part in her lessons. We had lots of fun.

I rented a small hall and hired this band to celebrate graduations for myself and my son. Chris was great to work with. His message to me was 'this is your party and our band will accomodate whatever you like.' He sent me out a list of their pieces and I could choose the order if I wanted. I could also request the type of music that I wanted. Their performance was fantastic - sax and piano/voice with a synthesized drum. We had background music with dinner and danced following to absolutely great music. The band even stayed later because our party had a late start. Really great performers who are personable and a pleasure to hire. I highly recommend this band although I hesitate to make this public statement in case they will be booked when I want them to play for our next occasion :)

I engaged Jonathan for a Friday early evening cocktail party in our building, most of the people being decidedly seniors. We corresponded and worked out details, and he did everything he said he would do and then some. Friendly, easy to work with, punctual, and a terrific entertainer. He played and sang, and mingled with the crowd as he did so. Jonathan is a fine pro and a truly nice guy. I'd hire him again in a minute, and plan to do so.

Hans & The Wanted played our wedding and it was an absolute blast! One of the first things we decided on when we got engaged was that we wanted a live band. We landed on these guys and it was definitely the right choice and a major highlight of the night. Their range is incredible, their pitch is impeccable, and they're a damn good value as well. I wholeheartedly recommend them and I'll book them again any chance I get. Go see them play and sing some live band karaoke while you're at it—it's guaranteed to be a good time!

My parents, their guests, and our family enjoyed the music Dee provided for their party SO MUCH! It’s a week later and people at the Bonaventure are still talking about it – particularly how wonderful the music was. Dee brought back many special memories for the whole group with excellent song selections and beautiful singing. I am very pleased Dee was able to find music for my parents’ favorite songs – it added a personal note and really touched their hearts. The extra effort he went to in finding the music and rehearsing the special songs was really appreciated! I also admire how prepared and organized Dee was with his equipment – It was a quick set up and his attention to safety and access were terrific. It was a very happy occasion for all of us. Dee really added to its specialness.

My Daughter went from never playing an instrument to being proficient on her trumpet in 8 months. Her band teacher is so impressed. Much of her understanding of music comes from her voice and trumpet lessons with Ms. Valardi. She is branching out into piano this summer and has even attempted to write her own solo. A music teacher that understands the excitement of a student and balances that with foundation is a wonderful thing to find. Ms Valardi is just that.

Sarah did a one on one workshop with my daughter's band, Death By Thumb. She was able to connect with them immediately and help them sort out some issues they had as a band. Then they went right into song writing. Polished off one and started another all in a two hour period. One song called Mirror was performed just a few weeks later at the Analog Theater in late November. The band members have a lot respect for her and admire what she is doing with her own career. The kids want her to come back as soon as possible! Thank you Sarah, and we hope to see you soon!!

Dennis was great at communicating leading up to the day of the event. At the event he provided a wonderful acoustic guitar backdrop that really completed the atmosphere for our wine harvest party. Several guests complimented that they enjoyed the music. I highly recommend Dennis Hitchcox!

Wow what a phenomenal experience we had when we hired Naughty Dog! He communicated well and professionally leading up to the event. His equipment was in great shape and obviously high quality. We hired him to play the university of Oregons law school Halloween party at Kowloons in Eugene. Everyone loved his music and him in general. Since then we have recommended him to friends and he is preparing to play our formal ball late January! A must hire young professional who obviously loves what he does with passion. And reasonable too :)

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
