Greetings from the Resnais Family, The first time we met Tristano and hired his services was actually to cover two events in one: the occasion of our tying the knot which we wanted to keep intimate and small-scale, celebrated together with my parents' silver anniversary. This was not the first time we had decided on hiring a professional photographer. As usual, we spent a good chunk of time looking at many photographers and their portfolios. Frankly, most of them were either flat and conventional or their examples pretty much looked the same to us, looking like the same photographer could have taken most of those shots, and we definitely wanted something very special. Tristano's background is in the visual arts and history of photography and he has trained for several years in Europe. We thought it would be great to have someone like him tackle the job, someone who has a much broader background in photography and is able create a variety of visual impressions. We asked Tristano if he could give us a 50's look for the combined occasion, not just in terms of the costumes, cars and gadgets from the 50's which my dad had collected and filled the house and four garages with, but in the way people looked in those old B & W prints and how they were photographed. Tristano’s images, when he sent us the proofs a week later, were simply brilliant. Even more amazing, we couldn't tell the difference between my parent's wedding pictures and our own. A year later, we asked Tristano to photograph the birth of our first born and decided to leave it to him to surprise us. This time his pictures were spontaneous and completely contemporary, serene and beautiful images without the use of flash or harsh light. We had the birth at home in subdued light, but still Tristano's images were so rich with an abundance of playful light and shadow, showing great sensitivity that perfectly matched the holiness of the occasion. To this day we are extremely grateful to Tristano and feel his work has transformed those special moments into something even more memorable and lovely to behold. Most of all, it was the simplicity of his photographs that made them all the more revealing and powerful as they unveil those first moments of contact between mother and baby. His unique eye for lighting the scene, and for style and composition, helped us realize how little we had originally understood about the possibilities of photographic expression, and most of all, the magic that can be created with a camera when put in the hands of an artist instead of a technician.
