When I reached the editing phase for my book, Starvation to Salvation—Paul Patkotak, Apostle of the North, I was fortunate to find an amazing editor, Erick Mertz of Portland, Oregon. I strongly believe that nothing happens by chance and that I was led to him for my project. Although I never met Erick personally, throughout the entire editing process, he smoothed out the rough edges of my writing while also allowing my voice to come through. He also understood the many unique nuances of my Inupiaq Eskimo culture. Since getting a book published is new to me, Erick was also instrumental in guiding me through the entire process. Everyone Erick referred me to has been exceptionally qualified including the proofreader, mapmaker and book cover designer. Quyanaqpak (thank you very much in Inupiaq) Erick!

Erick did a fantastic job editing a manuscript for one of the writers I publish. The manuscript, a large historical fiction novel, was a difficult piece of material to work through yet, Erick still finished on time. He stayed in touch during the project so I knew how things were going. Erick also offered other services which I may use in the future. He has a great understanding of the writing and publishing mechanics which helps a lot in projects like the one I gave him to proof read. I really am pleased with the work he did. I will use him again I am sure of this!

We are still working with Erick in writing our fathers' life story. Erick is very kind and is asking great questions to engage him into revealing himself! We can highly recommend Erick.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

The work decided to get me. I've always been a writer and I've always been interested in working on story craft. Going about that in a professional way is only natural.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

The most common type of work I encounter is a client who asks me to bring old, tired text back to life. I am also frequently contracted to do story edits and re-writes for clients who are working on fiction. I am adept at helping writers who are struggling to bring their deepest story out in their manuscript.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Keep an open mind. When it comes to writing, we are often trapped in the structures of our story. A good editor and ghostwriter will offer you opportunities to change some of those structures. It is OK to need help with a story that is personal and being open to structural changes is the best way to have a fresh point of entry.
