Mr. Chavez was the first to call back, and offered to haul off some old furniture same day. Started raining, and he overran on his appointment time, but called us back to let us know the situation. Very fair with the price, and we got it loaded into his truck and off he went within 20 minutes. We got soaked in the torrential downpour, and he never (once) complained. I would recommend Emiliano for future jobs including landscaping!

We contracted with Damas Painting and Construction to paint the exterior of our home. Fernando was great to work with, best communication I've ever had with a contractor. They consulted with us on color, planning and trim style. We were flexible on scheduling but Fernando and his team were on time and everything went according to plans. Our house looks great!

John and Shane did a fantastic job with a large amount of work that I needed done! In a single day they pruned two large box elders, 4 overgrown camellias, dug up a large swath of blackberry bushes, and laid down wood chips. Their bid was the best by far and I felt like they really cared about not only the health and appearance of my trees/shrubs, but also my experience as a customer. I would highly recommend them!

I met with Omar and discussed the needs for the property. He was very polite and professional. We agreed on a term and they got right on the job. They also put down new bark that was badly needed in the landscaping over a very rainy weekend and it looks so much better. Our tenants are very happy and so are we. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing lawn services.

I interviewed 4 highly recommended landscapers for the job. Dario didn't come in as the cheapest but he clearly knew what I wanted and what he could guarantee. We negotiated the price and he and his dedicated staff delivered. Excellent attention to detail

I had Will and his crew from Greenscape Landscaping clear my yard of all the weeds, rake up the dog doo, and mow the grass, as well as spread garden compose in all of the planting beds. They did an excellent job and made my place look great, so I'm having them do my regular service twice a month. They're courteous, friendly, and very professional. I highly recommend Greenscape Landscaping!

I could not be happier with the job Rise Solutions did on installing my new sod. They were professional, easy to talk to and work with, efficient, knowledgeable and reasonably priced. I also appreciate that their company is environmentally conscious, not using any harmful chemicals that could potentially harm pets. I would highly recommend hiring Rise Solutions for your next landscaping project!

As a senior divorced woman it is hard to find a landscaper or contractor who is respectful and fair. Roberto’s landscape and maintenance is fairly priced, fast but pay close attention to detail, and extremely professional with the respectful conversations amongst each other without using curse words in every sentence. I at no time felt uneasy, being taken advantage of, or that I couldn’t afford their services. The crew works well together, are kind, and walked me through the whole job at the end. I have nothing but great praise and gratitude for them. Amanda Witter

I reached out on here for a landscapers ho could do landscape clearing and preparation for a home that we were putting on the market to lease out. As a property management company we understand first impressions determine quite a lot. I received 2 landscapers who reached out and ultimately chose 7days Lawn Care Maintenance. We could go on and on about how great Enrique was in communicating with us, showing up for schedule appointments, his value, his personality and grasp of the vision we had for the property and much more. We have found a long term partner in landscaping. A company we can trust and go to when we need our owners homes to get an extra touch of spruce up. Thanks Enrique for your stewardship, integrity and how hard you worked. Picture tell a thousand words.

Luis was professional. He was honest regarding the cost including the breakdown of materials and labor. He was on time to both the quote and the actual job. My yard looks beautiful and functional for the small space. I had a flooding issue and he installed French drain, catch base and landscaped the yard. I would recommend Luis for any job!

Ramiro did an amazing job on getting our previous property ready to sell. The curb appeal was a huge plus in selling! We also had him help with the property we moved to and he was able to clear all blackberry bushes out and help trim up some dangerous tree branches giving us a beautiful result and great impression on our customers for our family owned business that we run off our property. I highly recommend him. He was professional and offered great pricing.

We agreed that he would pick up the leaves and mow the lawn. That's all we wanted done, and he was great. Our yard looks so much better. I will hire him again when we need work done. He was reliable and gave me a timeline for when he could do the work. I like the fact that he communicated.

The crew at allied pest and wildlife really did a good job. From the office staff to the field manager mike they all really communicated well and I had a very positive experience. I had raccoons get into my attic and they had gone unnoticed for some time as the insulation was completely trashed. Highly recommend them in fact I would hire them again if I ever needed too.

JH landscaping has been wonderful to work with and they do an amazing job with yard maintenance. We even called them to have our large yard bark dusted and they were able to squeeze us in the same week(we were on a time crunch before taking photos to sell our house). Everyone we met is hardworking and kind and they do great work! I will definitely be hiring them back for our new house once we move!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

What's the best way to maintain your lawn?

Keeping a lawn lush and green requires consistent mowing, weeding, watering, fertilizing and more. If your lawn is particularly large, it may make sense to hire a full-service lawn care provider. Whether you take a DIY approach or bring in the experts, maintaining your lawn requires a range of tasks.

Plan to mow the lawn often, allowing it stay longer than may seem convenient — longer grass is healthier grass. The general rule is to cut off no more than a third of the grass blade. This helps prevent damage to the lawn as well as keeping weeds from taking root. It’s also important to remove any weeds, then prevent new ones from growing. In spring, consider spraying a pre-emergent herbicide on your lawn to prevent crabgrass and other types of weeds from sprouting from seed. During other seasons, broadleaf weeds like dandelions can be pulled by hand or sprayed with weed killers. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, allowing the sun to help dry the grass. Make sure to thoroughly soak the lawn so that the water penetrates several inches into the ground.

Lawn care also requires feeding; look for a mixture of fast- and slow-release fertilizers that include nitrogen. Some lawns also benefit from aeration, which creates small holes to let air, water and nutrients penetrate the grass roots. Although most homeowners can manage these tasks on their own, a full-service lawn care company can handle them on a regular schedule, taking the guesswork out of maintaining a beautiful lawn.

How do you look after your lawn?

Having a beautiful lawn doesn’t just happen by magic. A multi-pronged approach to lawn care will result in a healthy lawn that will have your neighbors green with envy. The national average price for multi-service lawn care ranges from $40 to $50. Whether you tackle the project yourself or hire a lawn care professional, looking after your lawn requires consistent work. A baseline of lawn care is keeping your grass mowed and your irrigation system working properly. Fertilizing plants and grasses, as well as trimming and pruning foliage, may promote the health of your plants and lawn. Many lawn care pros offer different packages with varying monthly fees depending on your lawn size and the services you desire. Here are a few examples of average lawn care prices:

  • 1,000- to 2,500-square-foot lawn: $60-$90 per month
  • 5,000-square-foot lawn or larger: $110-$150 per month.
    • Includes lawn maintenance, cleanups and irrigation repairs. The company trims shrubs, pulls weeds, blows out yard waste, fertilizes and does minor irrigation repairs.
  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
  • 8,001- to 15,000-square-foot property: $35 per week/$140 per month.
  • 15,001- to 20,000-square-foot property: $40 per week/$160 per month.
    • Includes mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.
