Introduction
Pawsitively Trained, LLC uses positive training techniques to encourage the dogs to choose the correct behaviors as opposed to being afraid of making the wrong choices. This program teaches the dogs to willingly think and try to figure out which response is the most appropriate for the situation, making training more fun for the dogs and their owners. No dogs are "finished" with training; every dog is capable of learning something new, no matter the age or the breed, and every owner is able to teach their dog more advanced behaviors. My goal as a dog trainer is to create and strengthen as many dog-human bonds as possible and teach owners how to make their dogs happy, respectful members of the family.

Kelsey taught the class I went to when I got my very first puppy. I had no idea about puppy specific behavior, how to crate or potty train, or the basics of positive training. She laid down the foundations of dog phycology and reward based philosophy in a way that I understood the both concepts and how to apply them with my puppy. From big picture to step by step instruction, Kelsey really taught me how to teach and talk to my pup. Almost 4 years later that puppy is still the best behaved mutt I know!

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I started working with dogs when I volunteered raising Guide Dog puppies and teaching other puppy raisers how to train and socialize their pups. My first Guide Dog graduated in 2005. I was then a District Mentor Trainer for Petco for 4 years, teaching over 30 group classes per week as well as training the new Petco dog trainers in multiple stores. I completed my Petco Dog Trainer Certification in 2009. I became a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator in 2012. I started my own business, became a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, and was certified through Animal Behavior College in 2013. I also have a background in horse training and have spent countless hours working with rescue and shelter dogs.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Always pick a trainer that matches your personality! It's challenging to learn from someone you don't get along with. Ask how the trainer would work on your particular issue - we won't know how specifically until we meet the dog and figure out the details but we have a general idea. Do the training methods used make sense to you? You may not understand our exact process but it shouldn't be so confusing that humans can't even comprehend it. Do they use positive training methods. Positive methods are scientifically proven to be more effective than other methods. Why use outdated methods that may not even give you the desired results? Trainers should be upfront about their training principles - stick with someone who is pawsitive!
