He took his time and did the job right. He still needs to return to replace a few tiles . They were not installed because it was wet the day he completed all the other jobs.

Jonathan worked very diligently and quietly while he spent several hours cleaning my cousin's home - we paid for his services as a gift. He was very professional, and my cousins were thoroughly impressed and delighted to have his help and were very happy with his results. Jonathan cleaned the kitchen; stove, microwave, floor (on hands and knees), the living spaces; cleaned the floors, dusted, and vacuumed inside and outside of the couches (they looked brand new once he finished), he cleaned the bathrooms; toilets, sinks, tub/shower, and floor (also on hands and knees), and more. Jonathan asked for a very reasonable price, and we would not hesitate to pay for his services again given the quality and efficiency.

We had a heavy floor cleaning job in our office bathrooms. The ProCleaning team was responsive, cooperative, thorough, and professional. The result is a floor that I once thought I had to replace, now looks like new.

Working with Groutsmith was an very satisfying experience from start to finish. The estimate was quick and much less than what I expected. Groutsmith showed up on time on the day the work was scheduled and finished in a timely manner. Groutsmith did a fantastic job restoring my tile and grout. My tile looks better than when it was new in 1988. They cleaned up after themselves and left my house looking better than when they came. Cudos to Brad Young and his team at Groutsmith.

Bill completely remodeled our bathroom and did an outstanding job. He was here everyday and if he was running late he let us know and he returned all of our calls promptly. Our job was more complicated and difficult than any of us expected but Bill worked through it all and the outcome was beautiful. We purchased very large tile for the walls and while that was something he hadn't done before, he did his homework, secured the necessary tools and made the end product perfect. He did everything we asked and more. He was very pleasant to have in our home and he and his crew worked hard from the time they arrived until they left. Bill was kind to answer questions for us that were not related to the bathroom and as we were doing some work, he stepped in and offered a helping hand and some suggestions at times. We also had him put in a drywall ceiling and tile floor in our basement and both were very well done. He is a master at drywall. Bill has my highest recommendation. I would hire him again.

Sage came to my one-bedroom apartment and completed a very thorough clean. I have tried several cleaners in the past, but was always disappointed when they did not pay attention to detail, like the edges of floors and carpets and random dust. Sage definitely pays attention to detail. The only minor negative thing that I would mention is that Sage initially estimated that it would take 4-5 hours to clean, closer to 4. I had a bunch of things to do that day and planned on coming back after 4-5 hours and then leaving again, but Sage was still cleaning. Not a huge deal, since I'll admit my apartment was very dusty and hadn't been cleaned in a while. So just leave a little extra time, especially if your place hasn't been cleaned in a while or is extra dirty. Overall, excellent job!

My basement floor, size approximately 435 sq. ft., needed leveled. The floor height varied up to five and six inches toward the center. It sloped downward toward the drain in the front and back upward toward the front wall. The floor was painted concrete from at least 50 years ago, and in a few spots the concrete was slightly chipped and cracked. The rear of the basement had a slight slope but was not as drastic as the front part. I had cement contractors suggesting to break up only the front half of the existing concrete and pour new concrete. I also had another flooring contractor willing to pour the leveling compound Ardex. Cost for the Ardex job would have been $3,200, but that was for using only twenty-five 50# bags of Ardex. If I needed any more bags of Ardex, I would have to assume the cost after the first 25 bags at a cost of $60.00 per bag. I was very reluctant to do this. I found Bamm Flooring and Construction with a very good rating and called them. Tony Georgevich said he could use Quikrete Concrete Mix for leveling, as long as I covered the finished floor with either slate, ceramic or porcelain tile. Tony, Adrian and Ray did an excellent job. They worked for about two weeks from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The floor still had some unevenness. However, it was 95% improved. They ended up using over 117 bags of 60# Quikrete @ $2.78/bag. I was so glad I did not use the Ardex product. After this leveling was complete, they laid the tile. This floor required 30 cartons of Brazilian Slate Porcelain. My basement floor is such an improvement that I actually love working in it now. Tony is a perfectionist and you can tell he is proud of his work. I would recommend this company for any flooring job, regardless of the difficulty. After they finished the floor, I asked if Adrian could help me unclog my gutters and insert gutter guards, which he did. Overall, I am very happy with the job that these guys did and would call on them again for flooring or other household projects.

Charles remodeled the kitchen in our small Brookline home. We were most impressed by the quickness and cleanliness of the demolition process. Charles went above and beyond to assist us with choosing the perfect tile for the backsplash and floor. Charles showed up on time every day of the renovation and did a spectacular job in reference to the quality of work. We are ecstatic over our new kitchen.

Chadd and Way Maker Solutions performed the tile work in my new bathroom. The tile consisted of the floor, all the walls and the ceiling, including the tub surround and shower. The work was completed in a timely manor and the end results are outstanding. The price was reasonable for the work involved. Chadd was in communication on a daily basis and offered suggestions on how to make the design better. I am satisfied with their work.

Andrew does wonderful work at excellent prices! I highly recommend him for big and small jobs. If it's broken, he can fix it. If you want to remodel, he knows how to do it. Polite, pleasant and professional. Neat and trustworthy - completes things the right way, not just the easy way. Fast and efficient. Always returns calls and provides solutions or suggestions. Not a smoker. I am a past and recent customer. He has remodeled 2 bathrooms (plumbing, floors, fixtures, paint), hung doors, replaced woodwork, laid tile, updated light fixtures, sealed skylights, checked roofing, and done miscellaneous repairs at my house. I will definitely hire him again.

A few years ago, I bought an old 5 bedroom, 3 bath house that hadn't been maintained for 20 years. The master bathroom, a rare thing for a house built in the 1930's was beyond repair to say the least. With so much other work to do in the house, I decided to hire someone to tackle it and I'm so glad that I did. John did a wonderful job turning my nightmare bathroom into a truly spa like experience! The work included demo of the old bathroom, converting a closet to a tiled walk-in shower, installing a whirlpool bathtub with tile surround, a new toilet, a new sink with vanity and finally a beautiful tile floor. Thank you John! I think it goes without saying that I will be recommending you to all of my family and friends.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

        • Old standard or electric toothbrush
        • Stiff bristle brush
        • Spray bottle
        • White vinegar
        • Commercial grout cleaner

How do professionals clean tile and grout?

If you need tile and grout cleaning and don’t have the time or mobility for scrubbing your entire house on your hands and knees, it’s time to turn to the pros. Tile and grout cleaning professionals have industrial-grade machines designed for the sole task of cleaning the porous materials of grout and tile. Typically, a cleaning pro will come out to assess the job and provide you with a quote. Often they charge per square foot (for example, 75 cents per square foot), with higher prices or an hourly rate for areas that will need hand cleaning. The national average cost for tile and grout cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Once onsite, the pros thoroughly clean the area by wiping or sweeping down and then vacuuming up any dry dirt. Next a chemical tile cleaner is sprayed over the surface, causing dirt to loosen and adhere to the spray; the industry term for this is “suspension.” The pros then clean the floor with professional-strength machines, which often use a combination of steam, brushes and vacuum to loosen, agitate and lift entrenched dirt. Your floor is then rinsed, removing all the spray. Usually a small room can be cleaned in under an hour. Applying a sealant afterward is recommend and will also affect cost.

How much does it cost to clean tile and grout?

The national average cost for tile and grout cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Pros may charge a flat fee or by the square foot. Rates can vary depending on the type of tile and grout you have (more delicate tiles may mean specialized products or careful handwashing), how dirty your tile and grout are, and what part of the country you are in (regional labor rates and costs to do business affect costs). For example, one floor cleaning company charges 75 cents per square foot for tile and grout cleaning for projects that permit cleaning by machine. Another company may charge $30-$50 per hour for hand-cleaning of tiles. Companies often charge a minimum fee for services to ensure their business expenses are met when they accept a job, no matter how small. In addition, a tile and flooring cleaning professional may charge added fees, such as $25 or more, to move heavy furniture or appliances.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
