I hired ADAD to install 4 replacement windows in my home. The windows were custom made so there was a bit of a wait but Mr. Dever made sure that I was kept updated. The price was reasonable compared to other quotes I received, and the windows are now installed and they look great. A+

I hired Keller Construction to replace my roof, install gutter guards, and replace 3 skylights. It was refreshing to find a straightforward contractor who wasn't pushy. Sherman, the owner, personally came to my house and was the first to provide me with a quote. After 2 weeks of quotes and sales pitches from other companies I was confident that his first quote offered the best value. He doesn't use a bunch of casual labor, so while I knew the job might take a little longer, I had piece of mind knowing the owner and his employee(s) would be the ones on my roof taking pride in the job that they promised, in writing, to stand behind. He has a ton of experience in the industry and seems to know where to take extra care to ensure the best long-term results. He didn't play games and fulfilled every promise he made. Sherman was responsive via email and phone throughout the process and was open to the couple minor things I wanted addressed as the work progressed - great professionalism. As for quality of their work, the roof looks beautiful! It makes our entire house look better and we can rest easy knowing our investment is protected from overhead. He replaced the plywood that needed to be replaced and didn't nickel and dime us in any way. He stuck exactly to his quote but took care to deal with any unforeseen conditions that became apparent as he worked, like back nailing all the plywood that had only been stapled by the builder 25 years ago. I am very happy with Sherman and Keller Construction and would absolutely use them again. A great experience with an honest, skilled contractor!

Sorry, I thought my review was left long ago! I have to leave a comment because this was the BEST experience I've ever had with a contractor. I had my basement windows installed and it was A LOT of work. Now the basement windows are the best windows in my house! Not because of the windows I selected, but because of the professional and impeccable work performed. I will be calling again for this year's project. Thank you so much, and I'm sorry this review is coming so late.

This was my first time using Madonnas and I had a positive experience. Communication was good throughout the process. They showed up on time, installed a piece of exterior molding and cleaned up afterwards. No complaints, would use them again.

They did a great job. They are very knowledgeable on windows- very professional installation. Mike and John put in a vinyl window for my steam room, along with two tempered glass accessory windows. They also adjusted several windows throughout the house and fixed a mechanism for opening a window that was not working correctly. They color matched the trim.

I would recommend Tom Falcone to anyone including my family and friends. His work was timely and he explained what he had done each day and told me what he was going to do the next. He tried his best to match a 70 year old weather beaten brick which was next to impossible. He repaired the roof leak and installed a chimney cap, painted a door and shutters. He was initially hired to do some mortar repair which he completed. Thank you so much Tom and side kick, Chris. Mary Beth

Kevin helped me hang a new storm door. He was very polite and knowledgeable about home repairs. After completing the job he only asked for less payment than what was originally quoted. I am very satisfied with his work.

Although the replacement storm windows have not been ordered yet, if they are 1/2 as good as the service so far, I am impressed. Nice to work with a pro who knows his product .

Window Guardians blew away my expectations compared to any other service I've ever paid for. Waldemar is an expert in his craft. The windows came out beautifully. I was off of work during the day of installation, so I got to see them uninstall and install the new windows. It was amazing to see the effort they put in to make my home more efficient. I couldn't be happier.

Paul installed both a storm and entry door for me. I was very happy with how everything turned out. He was always responsive to my questions, showed up on time for both the estimate and the work, and completed the job on the days and in the time promised. I would hire him again, and I recommend him to anyone who needs work done.

Renoviso is replacing a couple of windows and installing a skylight in my South Philly rowhouse. We looked into other companies for the job but our experience with Renoviso was the best by far -- fair, upfront pricing, no high pressure sales, and a helpful and knowledgeable team. Looking forward to having Joe and his team complete the install in the next few weeks. Happy to welcome Renoviso to the Philly area, I will definitely use them for future projects!

Guy Nacchio arrived right on time to review the project and provide an estimate. He clearly described the windows he planned to install in our basement. His estimate was very competitive. He completed the work as promised in an excellent manner. The windows look great and the workmanship was perfect.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
