Awesome experience with Sarita at my kids 7th birthday party. She was on time and began working immediately. The children and adults were more than pleased with her work. The line was so long we had to book an additional hour which Sarita was more than happy to accommodate. I will recommend her services to anyone looking for a great all around Henna artist in the area! Thanks again for making the party extra special!

We hired Namita Henna for bridal henna for myself and intricate henna for my mom and aunt. We were thrilled with her work and the work of the associate she brought to do my mom and aunt. Her designs were intricate, delicate and absolutely beautiful! The henna was definitely natural and took on such a nice dark color on my wedding day. She also worked very carefully but was fast, so it did not feel like a long process. I received so many compliments on my henna from wedding guests and random people on the street! It was a pleasure working with her and I wish we had booked her for another henna event we had because Namita's designs are so much superior to other henna artists.

I had my bridal henna done by Fiza. She helped me pick out the design for henna and did great job with the design I chose. It came out well. She also did henna for my aunt and mom. She is very nice, friendly and calm person to work with and her rates are reasonable as well. :)

She did such an amazing job. She was very easy to work with. Came prepared with high quality henna and was very clear that she had practiced my design of choice prior to placing my bridal mehndhi. The design came out clear and beautiful. The color came out great/dark. I received so many compliments, it was unbelievable! Definitely recommend Aarti for bridal henna or any other henna needs - punctual, precise, and friendly.

We hired Payal as a henna artist for our daughter's graduation party. Payal was prompt and professional and created some beautiful customized henna designs. She was such a crowd pleaser that we had her stay on for a few more hours. I would definitely use payal against other events and would highly recommend her!

I had wanted a very specific and nuanced project done for about ten years now: A very heavy metal looking portrait of myself. Yes its silly. But I wanted it. So badly. Just me, in a t-shirt and jeans, doing something so metal it would take your breath away. For a decade I had this idea and I'm glad I waited. No other artist could have delivered my vision for me as well as Katie Haire did. Katie was super easy to work with. She took time to listen to what I wanted done and then improved on my original ideas in ways I would have never thought possible. I now have a work of art that reflects what I wanted that will last me a life time. I can not recommend Katie hard enough. Beyond being a prodigious artist, she is an admirable human; patient, understanding, punctual, and brilliant. Congrats to you, dear reader -- your search is over. You have found your artist.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

      • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
      • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
