Charles was great! He not only helped me out with the project I needed done, he also fixed a bunch of the other ones that I tried to do myself. And he didn't even make fun of how many holes I'd accidentally put in my drywall. Would totally hire him again.

I had my roof replaced. Ben and his team were wonderful! He talked me through all of the issues with my existing roof, how he would fix everything, and explained all of the costs in the estimate. His estimate was lower than other contractors, and he was doing more than the others had proposed. They arrived on time, did the work in the proposed time and thoroughly cleaned up everything. Very pleased with the work , and will definitely hire him again!

We needed some trim work done to cover a settlement crack along a tray ceiling that I had not been able to repair. I posted the request on Thumbtack and got a few replies with hourly rates. I contacted a couple of the contractors because I wanted to get more than an hourly cost to do the work. I described the scope of the work to each contractor and said that I wanted to get a more concrete estimate. Joe Valentino of Valentino Construction and Design estimated the job would take about 3 hours to do. I agreed on the hourly rate, and I told him I would get the material and prime and paint the wood to be ready for him. We agreed on a date. Due to circumstances beyond our control that both Joe and I had, the work got delayed by about a month. Finally, a date was set. Joe said he would get the wood and prime it. I agreed. Joe and his helper showed up at the appointed time and got to work. They were meticulous in their work. Furniture was covered or moved and tarps were laid over the carpeting. Four hours later the work was done. Beautifully, I may add. The trim work was done and Joe had even given it a couple of coats of paint to finish it. Both my wife and I loved it. They cleaned up and vacuumed the carpets. Furniture was put back in place. I asked Joe what the cost would be. He told me that we had agreed to the three hours of labor and the cost of materials so that would be it. Fantastic I thought; a man of his word. I would highly recommend Valentino Construction and Design to anyone needing carpentry work. They are friendly, do great work and are reasonable with their pricing. I give them 5 stars!

George has done a variety of jobs for us. He has realigned pavers in our walkway, replaced drywall in our garage, and repaired the side and roof of our utility shed. The time spent on these jobs was variable, but was close to the amount estimated before he began work. The quality of the work was excellent. George comes promptly to review a project and give an estimate, and provides a written estimate via email within 24 hours. He is very professional and easy to work with. We have several other jobs waiting for him.

I had two jobs actually. Water damage and "plumber" damage. Jeff stopped over and put a fair estimate together and was then able to accurately match paint from 12 years ago. His painting skills are top notch and professional, and it included some new drywall being hung. When finished both areas were cleaner than when he arrived. Highly recommend JST Painting.

My experience with Beautiful Builders was great! I had a walk-in shower installed last Spring by "professional contractors'. The caulking was ugly, not done correctly, and just a mess. They worked tirelessly to get the mess cleaned up and installed new, professional caulking. It looks beautiful. I will post before and after pics once the plastic strips are installed to keep water from coming on the floor. They also put together some shelves for a pantry then arranged all our cupboard stuff and even cleaned the floor and dusted. Chelsea & Jessica are fantastic! I will be arranging for other jobs and they are my number one to contact. Very satisfied.

I recently hired Johnson Exteriors to replace my roof. Nate was by far one of the most knowledgeable people I've received an estimate from. He was really on top of making sure we were happy and that we selected the roof that was right for us. I'd recommend this company to anyone looking for a quality contractor that really cares about their customers wants and needs.

NJR not only was the most reasonably priced of the contractors who bid on my home improvement project, but they gave me more feedback and recommendations that proved beneficial. They also began the work on time, were extremely helpful and personable, and were always available via text message. And the improvements came out looking great. I would absolutely recommend them for any job.

Tyler did a great, professional job on our bathroom remodel. His attention to detail was excellent. Tyler kept us informed clearly and frequently. Excellent demeanor. We will be using him again to paint two rooms next week. He has been arguably the best contractor we have used for needed work at our home since we moved to Harrisburg four months ago.

My wife & I are 1st time home owners, and our deck was hit hard by this winter’s harsh weather. Rotting wood, chipping paint, and dirt/fungus build up was looking bad. Thanks to Tyler, our deck was completely refinished with a HIGH attention to detail. It looks and feels brand new and was done at the BEST price in less than 2 weeks from when we first contacted Tyler. Tyler treated this project like it was his own deck, and that is a rare thing to find. Incredible work! In the past year we’ve worked with many electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and landscapers working on our new house. Tyler stands out as being above and beyond the best at communication and punctuality. He got started on the job quickly, and always gave us updates as to when he would be working and when the project would be complete. He made sure we knew exactly what was going on, and gave us lots of insightful suggestions and options on how to get the best results. Tyler is experienced and knowledgeable, and worked with high quality Benjamin Moore exterior stain. Other contractors I quoted just planned on using a cheaper exterior paint that would’ve degraded much more quickly. Tyler did extensive prep work to make sure our deck was ready to paint. He ensured there was proper draining, cleared out hidden dirt between the deck boards, properly addressed and filled all the gaps and cracks, and better secured the railing and privacy fence. Other contractors I talked to just planned a simple power wash and paint, which would not have been enough to give our deck a several more years of life. I look forward to hiring Tyler again in the future to help us with our various projects around the house. His depth of knowledge, attention to detail, and prompt communication makes him easily the best contractor we’ve worked with. If you have a project you need done with quality and a high attention to detail, my wife and I highly recommend Tyler!

Created for You Remodeling did an excellent job on my whole house remodel. I was on a tight time frame, and Caleb worked tirelessly to deliver when promised. The quality and craftsmanship was amazing. Caleb's work ethic and trustworthiness gave me peace of mind to know things were running smoothly, even from across the country (we did a cross country move and moved in midway through the remodel). I could not have picked a better contractor for the job. The reason for my happiness is largely due to Caleb taking the time to listen and understand my vision of the final product. He offered great ideas and cost effective alternatives. He cared about the final product and it showed in every step of the process. Communication was excellent and issues were resolved immediately. I highly recommend Created for You Remodeling. Superior work with a smile.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
