My name is Matt and I have known and trained with Don for the past 2 years. I am 35 years old and have been around martial arts most of my life. I have a black belt in Kenpo karate and have trained in various styles over the years. I also have a side job with the PA athletic commission as an MMA inspector so I have been exposed to many mma schools and trainers. I can honestly say that Don is by far the best instructor in any martial art I have ever studied. First and foremost his knowledge is second to none. However what I find most impressive is Don's ability to teach and convey concepts to his students. He has an awesome ability to communicate and teach MMA, grappling and striking. He is down to earth and honestly wants his students to excel...he does not hold back knowledge. I really appreciate the fact that Don does not have any ego....despite being the most talented mixed martial artist in the tri-state area. I have never seen him throttle students to make himself look good. He truley cares about his students and I just wish I could have found a trainer like Don when I was 20 years old. I have 4 small children so I dont have as much time as I would like to train. Quite simply Don and PTT are the best around...not to mention that he is one of the nicest and most humble guys I have met. Thanks for what you do Don.
I attended the tai chi and bagua classes at Black Mountain for several years before work obligations took me away. I miss the place. The instructor realizes that students need to spar in order to effectively use the techniques they learn in a self defense scenario. Sparring nights were a good workout and always a time for self reflection for the purpose of improving. The instructor also allowed for student input as to what self defense applications we would practice each week. I appreciated this aspect. The mainstream self defense applications I experienced at other schools were rigid and didn't always cover the type of attacks I was concerned about encountering. The instructor is also very analytical, and takes wisdom from many sources, he and I are big boxing fans. We often talked about what movements and strategies we observed in major fights.
I have received training from Khama for the last two years. He has helped get me physically fit and keep me there. I enjoyed his training so much that I brought my two young children to learn and train with him. He is a great instructor and keeps me motivated. He is also willing to work with my changing schedule to ensure I am able to get my sessions in. I would recommend Khama as a trainer all the time. I look forward to continuing to work and learn from him. Thanks Coach.
I've been a student for the past 14 years, and I continue to come back week after week and learn from David because there's always something new. Not only can I fine-tune my skills with new students, David is always studying and always advancing his own skill and craft and sharing that new knowledge with advanced students. In addition, the PCC is like a family. The students are a close-knit group of individuals, who enjoy each other's company while training together. There's no competition here to see who's the top dog. Each student is responsible for helping his or her classmates achieve a greater understanding of the techniques each and every class (with the help of the instructor). Last - and this is important to know if you're considering checking us out - David and the PCC do not teach for sport or MMA. We teach real self-defense tactics that anyone can use to defend themselves. You don't have to be young and in shape. You don't have to be flexible and kick over your head (in fact, we'll deter you from doing that!). You just have to interested in trying something new and have a passion for learning. If that's you, then why not give us a shot? You've got nothing to lose. Heck, you may even make a friend or two ;-)
Through self-defense classes with Dann I am more confident than I ever was before. He's a personable, good hearted guy outside of the cage, but when we're training there's no messing around. Originally bought 10 classes, but definitely coming back for more. Great workout + anxiety reliever!
As a professional boxing and mixed martial arts official, I have studied various styles of martial arts and combat sports for more than two decades. Meeting Jeff Fiedler and studying with him over the past 11 years has been truly transformative. The opportunity to train with Jeff involved an amazing integration of scientific principles, practical techniques, and meditative balance. In particular, the courses, practices, and seminars he led involving real-world scenarios were superb. His ability to teach students of diverse skill- and fitness-levels created a positive learning environment for all. I have been especially impressed with his capacity to customize classes and approaches for beginners, advanced professionals, law enforcement agencies, and military personnel among others. He is compassionate, humble, and results-drivenan authentic leader and innovator.
Justin does an awesome job of teaching/coaching the Chaos classes. He encourages me to push myself thereby improving myself. He also is great at teaching my boys in the Sports Fitness classes. The boys learn a lot while having fun! Thanks Justin !
The "Girls on Guard" workshop presented by Gwyn Nickens at Obama Academy is reflective of her outstanding and very engaging skills as an instructor. Her pristine techniques demonstrated to the senior girls made them eager to participate in the workshop. The student's were very impressed with Ms. Nickens and expressed interest in pursue more self defense classes with her.
My son Johnny attendes Tang Soo Do Karate College, in Robinson Twp. He is taught by Master Cipriani, whom in my opinion is totally amazing! This school not only teaches Tang Soo Do Karate but it teaches the children self-discipline, confidence, coordination, and helps the children develope a positive attitude. These skills that are taught here are also enforced here as well. I really enjoy the fact that some children join in the adult classes. (Under the close supervision of Master Cipriani) The higher degree belts are more than happy to help and teach the younger students. Many of the higher degree belts love to demonstrate their own techniques. John has been taking classes for about 1 1/2 yrs and has already improved in attitude and confidence. John is much stronger physically as well as mentally. I would reccomend this school to anyone! It is a wonderful place and the children have fun!!!!
I would like to take this opportunity to recommend to you Bryan Hogue and the "You Are Worth Protecting" Self Defense Classes. As a participant in these classes I became much more aware of safety and protection for women. I found Bryan's instruction to be clear, precise and easy to follow. Bryan gave a lot of valuable information and techniques without being overwhelming. While observing my fellow students in this class I watched women become more confident and empowered. As the previous Director of Programming at the YWCA I was more than satisfied that Bryan had achieved his goals and objectives for this series of classes. I received a great deal of positive feedback from the students. And, in fact, they were requesting additional classes and refresher classes periodically. I can highly recommend these classes and Bryan Hogue to you. In today's world these classes are beneficial to not only women, but the high school student, business men and women and the elderly. It has been my pleasure to work with Bryan. He is a very qualified professional. Susan Johnson
Before deciding upon a martial art school to join, I looked into a variety of programs. And, while each had their merits, none seemed to have the complete package I was looking for: that is, until I walked through the doors of Ryer Academy. After touring the facility and talking to Josh, joining was a no brainer. But as positive as my experience has been with the adult classes, I have to say that I am most impressed with Ryer Academies Bullying Prevention and Verbal Judo programs. These programs teach kids how to verbally diffuse a volatile situation before it becomes physical. These "verbal" self-defense skills aren't even talked about, let alone taught in most area schools and are the heart & soul of the Ryer way of winning a fight before a punch is thrown. If on the other hand violence is unavoidable, students at Ryer Academy are taught to defend themselves from three very important ranges: Kicking- punching, standing grappling, and the ground. This was a huge selling point for me as most of the other schools I visited only specialize in teaching one range. It's was over four years ago that I walked through the doors of Ryer Academy and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. This Academy has literally helped me take my life to the next level! It comes as no surprise that Ryer was voted best in the Burgh by the Tribune Review and won the Nickelodeon Parents Choice Award. Denny F
