For more than ten years, I have worked with students who have different abilities and different levels of interest in math and science. I have tutored AP Chemistry, AP Calculus, SAT and ACT prep, and sixth grade math, to name a few. I have expertise in my academic fields like any subject tutor should. But my strength is that I know that there is often more that one way to solve a problem. Helping a student to step back from a problem and then to approach it from a different direction is sometimes what it takes to get that student to see more clearly.
Students are sometimes too embarrassed to admit the extent of their struggles to their parents or classroom teachers. So when a student feels comfortable enough with me to really open up and to ask questions, I know that I have done something right. It gives me great pleasure to hear a student say thank you, now I understand.

Math is not my forte. So helping my son understand it was a constant struggle. And then I found Gina. She has helped my son improve on his skills. She is really patient with him. She took his learning style into consideration. And she has used tools and concepts with him to make it all click. I would certainly recommend her!

GQ tutored my son for 2 summers. The idea was for him to continue to progress during the months school was not in session, as well as to prepare him for placement tests.
Both times he did well preparing him for his math journey ahead.

My 12 year old daughter's experience and her 17 year old experience with Gina were superb. Makes me kind of wish I'd had the foresight and were-with-all to keep the tutoring a regular part of her diet of education. My Lark, combined with her creative, deliberative nature and a retiring teacher, who became fed up with questioning students who didn't understand wlth math being taught quickly enough, came to believe "she was not a math girl." By the way, my daughter is African American.
I use all of these identifiers on purpose.
While our world is changing, somewhat, the faster firing students are privileged in the classroom. They are in the "smart classes" etc. Of course my daughter heard the opposite messages at home and learned to ask questions when she didn't understand. If a teacher does not create an environment where it is safe to question and safe to not know.
I tell this little story, because Gina Quintana is the best definition of a 180 degrees different kind of teacher.
She is warm, kind and patient. She nurtures her students, no matter their background or struggles or issues or achievements. If you want to get a higher score on your SAT math section, choose Gina. If you want to convince your son or daughter that they can do math, do it well, and must persevere with this study, Gina can be your mouthpiece and your gift to your children.
She teaches with grace and great intelligence. You will be thrilled with hiring her.

Gina has tutored my daughter Sophie off and on in math for over 2 years. She made difficult mathematical concepts easy for Sophie to grasp. Sophie loved the time she spent with Gina. She gave Sophie the confidence she needed to do well in her geometry class.
Sophie is now a high school senior who will be attending Syracuse University in the fall. We have Gina to thank in part for her accomplishments.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I trained as a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, and I have worked in research and development. I have had many experiences in which I have worked with a group of technicians and engineers to figure out how we can design and build a useful prototype on a very meager budget. I have seen how individuals in a group bring different understandings to a problem.This experience has been very valuable for me as a teacher because it underscores the fact that sometimes there is more than one way to solve a problem - and more than one way to explain a concept.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
When I homeschooled my sons, I had many friends whose children attended local schools. They would often ask me to help their child with their math and science homework or school assignments. I soon had friends of those friends calling to ask if I would tutor their children. As the mother who always hosted play dates with a house full of children, other parents knew that their children felt comfortable with me. I realized that I had a gift for building a rapport with students and for helping them to develop the confidence to ask question.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I began to homeschool my son, who is now a college freshman, when he was in third grade. I enjoy young children and I have on occasion tutored elementary students, but I primarily work with students who are middle school, high school or college level. I have had students from our local public, parochial and private schools, as well as homeschoolers. I have students who are taking AP Calculus and Chemistry and who plan to major in math or science in college. I have students who struggle with math or chemistry. For those students I reinforce basic concepts and help them to regain their confidence.
