I came to Jon-Michael unhappy about the extra post-pregnancy pounds I could not get rid of. He tailored a workout for me that hit all my problem areas and it didn't take up lots of time, considering I don't have much with 2 kiddos. Jon-Michael was able to identify short falls in my diet and gave me realistic replacement suggestions. Jon-Michael doesn't only get you to focus on your physical self, but he also gives you the tools to take control of your mental self. He did this for me through visualization techniques. To this day, when I'm working out or admiring the 5000 calorie burger on TV, I visualize myself wearing a bathing suit and looking great and it usually gets me through either situation!
Great to have Jeff show me self defense with martial arts features. Jeff made it very easy and was able to commute to where I am and use the gym in my apartment complex. Overall fantastic experience and would recommend to others.
We are a family-oriented facility teaching men, women, teens and children with no prior experience to amateur and professional MMA competitors. World Class MMA and Karate teaches life skills, such as confidence, discipline and respect through the martial arts of muay Thai kickboxing, jiu jitsu, submission, grappling, and kali or eskrima for fun and self-defense.
Through self-defense classes with Dann I am more confident than I ever was before. He's a personable, good hearted guy outside of the cage, but when we're training there's no messing around. Originally bought 10 classes, but definitely coming back for more. Great workout + anxiety reliever!

Before deciding upon a martial art school to join, I looked into a variety of programs. And, while each had their merits, none seemed to have the complete package I was looking for: that is, until I walked through the doors of Ryer Academy. After touring the facility and talking to Josh, joining was a no brainer. But as positive as my experience has been with the adult classes, I have to say that I am most impressed with Ryer Academies Bullying Prevention and Verbal Judo programs. These programs teach kids how to verbally diffuse a volatile situation before it becomes physical. These "verbal" self-defense skills aren't even talked about, let alone taught in most area schools and are the heart & soul of the Ryer way of winning a fight before a punch is thrown. If on the other hand violence is unavoidable, students at Ryer Academy are taught to defend themselves from three very important ranges: Kicking- punching, standing grappling, and the ground. This was a huge selling point for me as most of the other schools I visited only specialize in teaching one range. It's was over four years ago that I walked through the doors of Ryer Academy and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. This Academy has literally helped me take my life to the next level! It comes as no surprise that Ryer was voted best in the Burgh by the Tribune Review and won the Nickelodeon Parents Choice Award. Denny F

Alex is a wonderful trainer. He is very professional and very passionate about what he does. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to achieve a healthier lifestyle and gain self confidence in their body image and strength!
I attended the tai chi and bagua classes at Black Mountain for several years before work obligations took me away. I miss the place. The instructor realizes that students need to spar in order to effectively use the techniques they learn in a self defense scenario. Sparring nights were a good workout and always a time for self reflection for the purpose of improving. The instructor also allowed for student input as to what self defense applications we would practice each week. I appreciated this aspect. The mainstream self defense applications I experienced at other schools were rigid and didn't always cover the type of attacks I was concerned about encountering. The instructor is also very analytical, and takes wisdom from many sources, he and I are big boxing fans. We often talked about what movements and strategies we observed in major fights.
I have been a student at Pittsburgh Combat Club for a little more than a year. I started by taking the up against a wall workshop. The best part of the workshop is that you are able to take away effective methods of defense that you can use instead of things that take years to do properly. This is vey important as it fulfills the purpose of taking a self defense workshop. Being a student, what you learn builds on skills like these and prepares you for far more situations. It also helps to create a confidence and awareness. As someone who has taken at least one self defense course a year for a very long time, this is the place I would recommend whether you are looking for a one time class or something consistent.
The "Girls on Guard" workshop presented by Gwyn Nickens at Obama Academy is reflective of her outstanding and very engaging skills as an instructor. Her pristine techniques demonstrated to the senior girls made them eager to participate in the workshop. The student's were very impressed with Ms. Nickens and expressed interest in pursue more self defense classes with her.
I am a 60 year old martial artist with over 20 years experience. I am a 3rd degree black belt in Chinese Kempo and a practitioner of what we in the west have commonly referred to as Kung Fu. My specialty is teaching those who may not be sure of the differences in the various forms of martial arts, and especially those who may not feel that they are powerful or athletic enough to practice a fighting art. It is easily adaptable to smaller, lighter individuals, older people and females, although can be easily transformed into a "harder", more powerful fighting style.
My son Johnny attendes Tang Soo Do Karate College, in Robinson Twp. He is taught by Master Cipriani, whom in my opinion is totally amazing! This school not only teaches Tang Soo Do Karate but it teaches the children self-discipline, confidence, coordination, and helps the children develope a positive attitude. These skills that are taught here are also enforced here as well. I really enjoy the fact that some children join in the adult classes. (Under the close supervision of Master Cipriani) The higher degree belts are more than happy to help and teach the younger students. Many of the higher degree belts love to demonstrate their own techniques. John has been taking classes for about 1 1/2 yrs and has already improved in attitude and confidence. John is much stronger physically as well as mentally. I would reccomend this school to anyone! It is a wonderful place and the children have fun!!!!
Khama is currently training me in MMA. I love his enthusiasm, and his fighting experience shows in his teaching. Most importantly, I can see how he's taken my personal goals to heart when designing my training regimen. He's also been able to instantly identify habits I've established through traditional martial arts that could prove dangerous in an actual self defense scenario. I'm not surprised given his own background in TMA.
