Latoya arrived to my party promptly and began to set up all of her things immediately after I discussed the details. All of the kids really enjoyed her work and even seemed to prefer her to the other artist I had! Will definitely hire in the future. Thanks again

Steve saved my computer! I am a graphic designer and use my computer extensively; however, a few months ago, I spilled soup on my keyboard and started having all kinds of issues with it. Nothing was working properly: fonts, programs, search functions, browser...nothing! I tried taking it to the Apple Store but they were charging $497 just to send it out to get looked at. That didn't even include what the repair might cost! Besides, I couldn't afford to be without my computer for that long. So I hit up Google and found Steve on Thumbtack. He was able to give me a pretty accurate diagnostic just via our messaging on Thumbtack when I told him the issues I was having. He also made a house call the NEXT DAY! He replaced my hard drive, saved 200 GB of data, re-installed my OS, and replaced my keyboard all for way less than the Apple store was charging for the initial diagnostic. My Mac is now working like new. Steve knows his stuff and is now my go-to for all things Mac (he also works on PCs). I would highly recommend him and already have to several family members. Thanks Steve!

I hired Robin to help me with updating 18 yr.old townhouse I downsized to. I have changed my preferences from traditional to a pared down contemporary look. Robin is helping me with this transition by planning work in phases so I can budget ,color scheme selection, repositioning of current furniture and guidance about new purchases. She is highly professional, realistic, style versatile and very importantly -practical about my needs. She is not like other designers I have encountered who charge exhorbitant rates or require you to buy products. She is truly a design consultant and customer focused. Her rates are very reasonable -whether you want her help with a small project or a complete design and project management of a whole house remodel. I am still working with her on my next project - I highly recommend her.

I have worked with Sue for over 15 years, and she is one the very best, most professional graphic designers I've ever known. Her work is creative, fresh and highly effective from a communication perspective. Sue really understands and embraces the importance of graphic design that supports the marketing message, engages the target audience and achieves the project objective. She is also fun to work with and definitely "client friendly!" She has my highest recommendation.

Lynae decorated my living room. The colores blend so well together. She even found a painting to pull it all together. The room can take on a different look by changing out the throw pillows when ever I get ready. She does amazing work. And she is so patient. I will use her services again!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

What makes a good logo design?

A good logo is an easily identifiable, memorable image that represents your brand. A good logo design aligns with your business model and expresses your company’s core values. A good logo design is simple, appealing, and easy for customers and viewers to quickly process. Some of the key components of a great logo are type, color palette and design. The scale, font and arrangement of the text you select will all make a difference in the feel and representation of your brand. A graphic designer will help you home in on the colors that best represent your identity and help you keep the color palette simple. The design of your logo includes the shapes you select and the way the color and type are arranged together. Investing in the services of a professional to create your logo design is likely a smart investment for any size business. Nationally, the average price range for a logo designer ranges from $170 to $250.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

  • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
  • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
  • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
