I hired Mr. Farrell to come and figure out what was wrong with my furnace. Mr. Farrell came to my house and explained to me what the possible problem was with my furnace. He advised me that the issue with my furnace was cause either by a faulty fan limit control switch or a bad thermocyple. He advised me not to worry and told me that he would isolate the problem and repair my furnace. I was skeptical because days before Mr. Farrell showed up to repair my furnace I paid another company to figure out the problem and they could not resolve the issue even though the other company advertised that they had over 25 years experience in the heating repair industry. Mr. Farrell and his company was successful with repairing my furnace and recommended things that I could do to extend the life of the furnace. One thing I liked about Mr. Farrell was that he did not rush the job and he made sure that I was completely satisfied before he left my house. He re-tested the furnace a few times before he left to make sure that it was operating properly. Based on my experience with Mr. Farrell I would have to say that he is a knowledgeble heating repair professional that is honest and straightforward not a fast talker trying to make a quick buck. His fee were more than reasonable and I would recommend his company to anybody that is looking for a reputable company to repair your furnace.

Thank goodness for Remy! our furnace stopped working just before a big snowstorm and we were in trouble with a toddler and a new baby. Remy gave a very reasonable quote and above and beyond by driving through a blizzard to get to our house. He was quick and very pleasant. When he left, we had a nice toasty house.

I found Mike Drohan on Thumbprint and after explaining our situation (we had another company come out last week and they charged us an astronomical price and after a few days, our AC unit was not working again.), Mike was kind enough to suggest that I call the previous company to see if they would value the warranty. After being stood up by our previous company, and a few phone calls to explain the situation to Mike, he rearranged his schedule to come today. Mike evaluated the situation quickly, fixed the problem, and even saved us money by using Freon from our other unit. He is a stand up guy, who takes pride in his work, and also gave us some pointers on how to maintain the unit throughout the year. I would highly recommend Mike Drohan for your HVAC and heating needs!

Pascual and his team were great to work with. I contacted them, and they came out the same day to replace my hot water tank. They performed the work quickly, professionally, and for the quoted price, even discovering and repairing a propane leak while there. Highly recommended!

Bob was on-time, professional, and worked hard on trying to diagnose the problem with my refrigerator. Unfortunately, my fridge was beyond repair, but Bob was honest and did not do any additional work without consulting me.

Though we were dismayed to learn our new home's furnace was NOT 14yrs old but 1972, we were very happy with Jonathan's knowledge of this old system and reassurance we cam keep it going. He explained the pilot system and everything to us and even came right in testing CO levels all around. Will definitely use him in the future.

I was frightened and apprehensive about the day my furnace would decide to go to the furnace Cemetery. Well that day happened on Friday October 13th. The furnace clearly malfunctioned and I was forced to replace it. On that very same day I use Thumbtack to locate a technician, in less than 72 hours I had been contacted by Mike at TopKnotch, had an appointment scheduled and had a brand new furnace and thermostat installed. It was absolutely painless, definitely affordable, and literally one of the most positive experiences I have ever had with a home repair.

They immediately responded and seemed knowledgeable. They told me things my regular oil furnace cleaner company should have told me. Friendly, accommodating with times, follow up. I did not use them for the service, so I can't speak to the actual work quality, but their customer service was fantastic.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

      • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
      • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
      • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
      • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
      • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
      • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
      • Cleaning and oiling the blower
      • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
      • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
      • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

      • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
        • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
      • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
      • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
      • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
