Robin is a wonderful trainer. She has a genuine love for pets and her energy around them really translates to results. Our two-year-old greyhound new addition needed to be housebroken and was terrified of stairs. Robin estimated that we'd be able to take care of all of that and more in 4-5 training sessions, but we got it done in 3. She was able to help us potty train and get our pup up the stairs in no time at all, all the while giving us tips to help with other things like separation anxiety, recall, and crate training. She also put in the effort to really spend time with our dog the one time we hired Robin for a mid-day walk. She was a pleasure to work with.

My gratitude to Kelly of Balanced Dog Training is immeasurable. The depth of her knowledge and talent allowed her to accomplish an amazing training regime for my puppy. Kelly goes the extra mile, and her genuine love for animals is evident in all she does. Kelly is undoubtably the one I would recommend for anyone's dog training needs. If you're not local to Kelly, you should still consider her as the mileage is definitely worth the reward. I plan to use her to board my puppy when occasions arise. WELL DONE!

So far our experience with Chad has been life changing for our family! He has done an amazing job giving us the tools needed to keep control over our dogs. Before his guidance we had issues with anxiety, insecurity and animal aggression, our dogs whom we love very much were getting in fights and it seemed as though there was no hope until we bagan our training with Chad. Now, not only are the dogs progressing and becoming more confident, calm and obedient with every lesson but we also feel more in control as the handlers. I would recommend Chad to anyone and I feel that the value of what he has given us far exceeds the price, he is worth every dime.

We all go to a trainer for a reason we have a problem with our dog. Marissa was able to recognize Rocco's problem immediately. She changed his collar and within 40 minutes there was a big change in him. I have Marissa's brochures and business cards in my place of business because I would highly recommend her. Jode Gammon

Tamara really knows how to get on a dog's level to train them. She uses a balanced training method that our Jack is really responding to. She takes the time to teach owners so the dogs don't relapse when they get home. I've been very pleased so far.

Have to say I am very happy with the care that K-9 Trail Blazers Dog Walking Service has given to both of my doggies. Memphis and Sierra are happy and tired after they go out for their walk. Salix takes them to the local dog park and they love it. I could not be happier and I know my kiddo are happy too. Thanks Salix at K-9 Trail Blazers.

Krysa helped me train my 5 year old Golden and my 1 year old Frenchy. She did wonders with Halo, the Golden, on his nervousness and general retriever ADHD. When it came to my Frenchy, Nola, Krysa showed immense patience with the puppy energy and quick but gentle redirection. She even prepared Nola for her first trip through the airport in only one or two sessions. After all Krysa's creative and tailored training methods for Nola, Nola was able to accompany me through long lines calmly and attentively, ignore loud noises and falling luggage, and even boarded the plane on her leash and sat calmly at my feet until take off. Overall, I enjoyed working with this trainer because she took my requests into close consideration and did so with patience and diligence. So glad I didn't get stuck with one of those trainers who gets frustrated and barks orders at the owner again!! Highly recommend this one!!

We met Melinda as our second training class trainer. We had been through puppy training class and were looking for a more advanced class for our second class. Melinda scheduled a meet and greet with my dog and I. She wanted to get to know us, review what we had learned, where we were struggling and what our goal for this training class should be. When we began our training class, I was frustrated with my 1 year old puppy and his listening skills. He seemed to have stopped listening to his basic commands and I didn't understand how to get him to listen again. She structured our training class to meet our needs. We met for 6 weeks. Each week she would teach me a skill to teach and work with my dog. She taught me how to read and work with my dog's personality. When one technique wasn't working, she taught me how to use a different technique. By the end of the six weeks, I was able to recognize when my dog was stressed and when he was ready to learn. For the end of the class, she asked me to teach my dog a new trick. I wasn't sure what to teach him, so she suggested simple trick with a twist. I had a lot of fun teaching him this trick and he learned it in about a day or two, so I found and began teaching him a more difficult trick. Melinda guided me while I was teaching him these new tricks. It was very rewarding for both my dog and myself! I would encourage anybody to hire Melinda as their trainer. She not only works with your dog, but she's training you as well. She was able to teach me how to have a better, less frustrating, loving relationship with my dog. After training with Melinda, the training goals that I thought were unreachable became very attainable! Helping you to train your dog is not only Melinda's career, but it's also her passion.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
