After the snow storm in December I had my back fence damaged by my neighbors pine tress. I had privacy fence and a retaining wall needing to be replaced, however with insurance not paying for much I needed to find a contractor that would do both at a reasonable price. My first quote was $10,000.00 ! Needles to say after going on Thumbtack I found Kris and I am so happy with everything he did and he is also doing my roof next. It’s hard to trust these days but you can trust him. He does not sub out his work and that says a lot as I I have had contractors in the past that did and it does not always turn out well.

I hired Lance to help rebuild a set of recessed basement entry stairs on my old house with a stone foundation. His quote was reasonable and he upfront about his experience level. Despite this being his first stair project, he went above and beyond to complete this custom job that ended up being more work than anticipated. I was very pleased with the end result and the experience overall. Lance was extremely patient and forthcoming with ideas as we had to troubleshoot the nuance of the existing stone work. Great overall person to work with! I highly recommend for stonework/hardscaping projects!!

David and his brother were able to get this job done promptly, actually earlier than i expected. The quality of work is outstanding, this company definitely set the bar very high for any competition, which at this point i no longer need to consider anyone else. I'm a disabled veteran and david made sure to go the extra mile to ensure i was satisfied. When all was said and done, he shook my hand and thanked me for my service. He has the upmost respect for people, and does a fantastic job. I've had rude contractors to my home before, the work was not so perfect. When you find a contractor with good moral values, work ethic, and good pricing, i no longer need to search elsewhere. Highly recommended!

This team did various work for me that ranged from building a retaining wall in my crawl space, building a three car garage and dock, and medium landscaping (involving leveling land in support of a garden). In all cases they came in on budget, responded to my questions, and the final product was great. Of note was their ability to listen to my thoughts for a specific project and suggest alternate methods which in some cases saved me money. Clean up at the end of each day (not at the end of each project) is the only area they could improve on but when brought the their attention, was quickly taken care of.

Before and after pictures tell the story of what happens when a master landscaper meets a yard in desperate need of a new beginning. We are thrilled with the recently completed landscaping by Homescapes Landscaping. The makeover could qualify to be featured in a Better Homes and Gardens magazine. During the day, the landscaping is eye candy from any angle. As soon as night falls, it is a sparkling jewel with the new LED lights Brad installed to replace the old non-LED lighting. At our first meeting, Brad talked with us about what we wanted and did not want. Subsequently, he presented a plan that incorporated our desires and his vast knowledge of plants and landscaping. We agreed on the plan and the price, making a few minor adjustments as it progressed to completion. Brad began our project by removing all of the old landscaping except for one much-loved River Birch tree. He then removed all of the old landscape lighting. He also built a retaining wall around the River Birch to prevent further erosion of the soil and to create a bed for new plants. He also installed two additional sprinklers. Next, Brad brought in the plants and 12 handsome boulders. The top soil he chose was rich and nurturing to the new plants and he topped it all off with a high grade of mulch. Brad incorporated a variety of textures and colors into the landscape. We have several greens - dark forest greens, gray-greens, typical greens - reds, pinks and purples along with a brilliant display of yellow flowers. Anchoring the overall look of trees and shrubs is the rich texture and color of a dozen beautiful boulders. While installing the landscaping, Brad also managed to turn a lingering drainage problem near our front porch into a creative work of art by constructing a small creek rock bed to drain rain water away from the sidewalk. All together, he incorporated seven new trees that will grow to varying heights and 91 bushes (some evergreens, some flowering, and some changing colors from one season to another) into our landscape. Now, a few months after planting in mid-March, everything is living and thriving – new leaves, new flowers, new life. He can do it all. If you want to increase the curb appeal of your home and/or its value and enjoy the beauty of your yard along with receiving rave reviews from family, friends and neighbors, we highly recommend to you Homescapes Landscaping.

Whereas other contractors came by "only to look at it," Jason from the very start said he was going to come "ready to do the job," and that's what he did. He charged a very reasonable price to seal the bricks and crown, and didn't charge separately for an inspection although he could have. He not only arrived on-time, but forty-five minutes early, in response to my saying that I would be traveling later today. Left me a stack of business cards ... smart man. Easily exceeded my every expectation.

Chris helped me with a bathroom remodel. They refinished the vanity and added a new sink, faucet, and granite counter top. They also painted and added a tile floor. The bathroom looked great! Chris was very prompt and professional and stuck to the deadline I gave him. I would recommend him for future work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
