Mr Buckles was engaged to install drywall in a downstairs 12x14 bedroom on one 8'x14' wall and the ceiling and spray popcorn texture on the ceiling, repair a 2'x5' section of a wall and a 3'x5' section of ceiling and spray popcorn texture on that ceiling above a shower in a downstairs bathroom, and repair a 4'x8' section of wall and a 3'x6' section of ceiling and spray texture in a laundry room. The total cost of this project was $850, to be paid 1/2 on completion of hanging the drywall and 1/2 on completion of the project. He was engaged to do this on a Monday, start the job on a Tuesday and he estimated that the job would be done on Thursday. He said he would be at the house by 0800, they showed up at 0915. When asked where they were he said they had to get materials. At the end of the first day Mr Buckles and his helper had hung the drywall. Some of the edges weren't cut straight and there was some (what I would consider large) gaps between some of the pieces of drywall. When asked about them, Mr Buckles said not to worry, the joint compound would take care of that. He and his helper left about 1500 without doing any joint compound at all that day. I paid him for the first half of the job - $425, as agreed. When they left, Mr Buckles said he would return on Wed to start the mud work. On wed, I was under the impression that he would be back at the house in the 0800-0900 time frame. I called at about 0930 and asked where he was. He said he had another job to do that morning (I was not told about this) and would be over shortly. He showed up around 10 (solo-no help at all) and mudded until about 1500. He didn't finish all the places where the mud needed to be placed and stated he would finish them on Thursday. He also had stated that he would spray in the texture on the ceiling on Thursday. On Thursday, he showed up with another helper a young man. They taped up plastic sheets around the walls and Mr Buckles mudded and sanded and feathered the joint between the old texture and where the new popcorn ceilings would be sprayed. He also mudded the sections where he missed the day before. He did NOT bring any texture to spray and gave the excuse that he needed to let the new mud dry and could complete the project on Friday. While mudding up high and trying to get off the stilts he stepped on a metal water retaining pan under the hot water heater and bent it all up. He offered no apology, no trying to fix it, no offer of replacement. On Friday, Mr Buckles had not shown by 10am. I called about 0945 and the call went to voice mail. Mr Buckles called me back at 1007. I asked where he was and again he stated that he had another job to do before coming to my house to complete the job. Again, I had NO IDEA that he was going to do this. He arrived solo, at the house at 1040 and began work. Mr Buckles completed all work at around 1530. I had to point out a couple of areas that needed attention prior to his departure which he fixed promptly. He was paid his remaining half of the agreed to price. The next day when everything had dried, and we could see the work area, there was a few areas that were completed at a level below that which was desired. Specifically, the ceiling popcorn was fine in the bedroom, but a bit sparse in coverage in the bathroom. Several areas had large amounts of joint compound that were missed in the sanding phase and needed attention prior to painting. Mr Buckles was a hard worker and I truly believe wants to do a good job. I was delighted that he was able to start the job the very next day after our initial consult. Things would have gone smoother and quicker if he had brought help on more than just 2 days. His communication with me could have been better. On 3 of the 4 days he was scheduled he went to a job before mine to do some work and I was not informed of this. I was looking for him in the 8-9 am range and he didn't show until after 10am. He needs to let his clients know about his schedule and the order in which he will get to them on any given day. The job went over by one day, and I believe he could have gotten done on the estimated 3 day window he gave if he had brought help every day. In the end, think Mr Buckles gave me a good job at a fair price.
