After the snow storm in December I had my back fence damaged by my neighbors pine tress. I had privacy fence and a retaining wall needing to be replaced, however with insurance not paying for much I needed to find a contractor that would do both at a reasonable price. My first quote was $10,000.00 ! Needles to say after going on Thumbtack I found Kris and I am so happy with everything he did and he is also doing my roof next. It’s hard to trust these days but you can trust him. He does not sub out his work and that says a lot as I I have had contractors in the past that did and it does not always turn out well.

Jill is a lifesaver .... With drywall repair going on at my house and Approx 48 hrs until the painter was ready to start a large project including our great room, kitchen and dining room I was overwhelmed with color choices and how to make them all flow together. I reached out for help on thumbtack knowing I needed an interior designers expertise as the large amount of wall space and Floor plan of our home is a challenge. Jill's response was immediate and she rearranged her schedule to accomodate my deadline. Within 24 hours of her initial visit to my home, she was back with paint chips and multi color schemes for me to choose from. She gave me suggestions on how to proceed, allowing me to make decisions but answering any and all questions I had. I learned a lot about paint in a very short time! Jill is energetic, enthusiastic and has an obvious passion for design and decor. She gave me some great suggestions for subsequent projects I have on my very long list. I will definitely call Jill for any design projects we have in the future.... It was a pleasure to meet and work with her!

We have been working on remodeling our house for about a year by ourselves and we just don't have time to get to everything since we both work. We were having trouble finding someone to help with remodeling until we signed up for Thumbtack. Paradise Installations started working almost immediately on the dry wall and crown molding we needed up. We are very happy with Mr. Ward and will hopefully be using him for our future projects, as we have the rest of our house to remodel. He has been very helpful with guiding us in the remodeling work we are wanting to do ourselves and he is very informative. I definitely recommend this company.

Danny did an excellent job on installing our fence and new gates. He did a barn door style on on side and regular gate on the other. Everything is level and framed correctly. Will use again and will recommend to others.

This team did various work for me that ranged from building a retaining wall in my crawl space, building a three car garage and dock, and medium landscaping (involving leveling land in support of a garden). In all cases they came in on budget, responded to my questions, and the final product was great. Of note was their ability to listen to my thoughts for a specific project and suggest alternate methods which in some cases saved me money. Clean up at the end of each day (not at the end of each project) is the only area they could improve on but when brought the their attention, was quickly taken care of.

We are remodeling our house and needed someone to build a knee wall for our new open-plan kitchen and prepare our new walk-in bathroom shower for tile. The work was done well and in a timely fashion. I would recommend Hart Construction for any remodel project around your house.

Mark and his crew painted the ENTIRE inside of my parents home (and the garage) that was being put on the market. Everything from trim, walls, ceilings, cabinets, inside closets, shoe racks....You name it and it was painted and made to look new again (in a 3800 sq. ft house)! I would highly recommend Mark to anyone for painting. I did not have to follow up and the project was completed in a timely manner. We hope to use him now for our own home.

Michael has been remodeling my basement bathroom. Everything is being replaced down to the drywall. We also added a shower which meant building out the wall into the next room to allow space to accommodate the shower. Michael is very easy to work with. He is kind, patient and I believe fair on his pricing. Even though it's taken longer than we initially planned, partially due to unforeseen complications that have come up along the way, it's been coming along well. Michael does very nice work. I appreciate how he always listens to my comments with interest. I am looking forward to him helping us with some other projects down the road. I feel confident to recommend Michael for your household project as well. He'll do an awesome job!

They clear a 24'x8 area took out vines and bushes. They covered it with plastic and munched. The also muched the front of the house. They left the place clean. They were very courteous. They have also taken tree down also.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
