I had a very troubling problem with my upstairs wiring and plugs that had resulted in sparks and I was concerned about fire. Rick came out that very day and was able to trouble shoot the issue and correct it. He was upfront and true to his estimate. I would recommend him highly to anyone needing electrical repairs in their home.

I posted on Thumbtack requesting someone to do plumbing work, immediately. Brad contacted me within about 10 minutes of posting and was here about an hour later. Brad stopped to purchase all of the necessary equipment to do the job prior to arriving. He was fast though he replaced the interior of the toilet tank, the handle to the water supply and other. I'm sure that I spent at least $100.00 less than I would have spent if I'd called Roto Rooter or ARS. I'm very satisfied with the service and would highly recommend Brad for repair of plumbing problems.

It was more pricey than a quote I received from another young-much more. However, I had hired Lamar, and I a woman of my word. He was late due to an oversight. Lamar did not have my address. That was a pretty big issue, but overall I was very satisfied with him as a human being and a Professional at what he does. Sometimes you have people come into your home to do work, and you cannot wait for him/her to leave. It was not that way with Lamar He was very pleasant and did a great job assembling my Headboard. I would use him again, and I would also refer him to anyone needing any similar job done in their home. Debbie O' Donnell P.S. Do you have any magnets and or pens. I collect them, so I always ask everyone I do Business with. If not...NO PROBLEM! I will continue using you anyway! THANKS AGAIN! Debbie

Adam is certainly a people's plumber! A very personable and down to earth type of guy. He initially came out with the intent to do the job and tried to repair my plumbing problem. When he saw that more work would be needed and that he would have to come back to complete the job; Adam was honest about prior commitments. He wanted to make me a priority and we agreed on a day for him return - which was a day and a half later. What stood out most about Adam was that he's dedicated and takes pride in his craft. I highly recommend Adam Whitehead's Plumbing Service and will definitely use him again if needed.

John came out to our home to repair a large hole in our bedroom wall. He did an excellent job! His price was more than fair; he actually charged less than what he initially quoted us. He was very pleasant to be around. While it can sometimes be uncomfortable to have strangers in your home to do repairs, I never felt uneasy while he was there. Very down to earth repairman who did excellent work. We will definitely be hiring him for any other repairs we may need in the future.

Clayton did an excellent job repairing a crack in my ceiling. He spent the time making sure the job was done correctly and not just patching a crack. I was very happy with the results. He was quick, polite and easy to work with scheduling. His price was also very reasonable. I plan on using him in the future for home repairs.

Had a problem with water leaking in through a window. Steve Clark came by the same day I spoke with him and gave me an estimate; turns out my window had been installed backwards! He explained what he'd need to do, the cost, and the timeframe. He scheduled the repair for the following week. Mr. Clark singlehandedly reinstalled my second-story window (removing and reinstalling siding, fixing the flashing, and other tweaks) - did a fantastic job, and came in at the exact time and cost, surprisingly low given that it was an all-day job! Really happy with the service received.

Super professional and helpful in walking me through options. He discussed what was included in the premium service for $250 all the way down to minimum service call of $85. If I thought this were a bigger job, I would likely hire them, but I don't think this is an $85 repair.

Gary did a wonderful job installing a very heavy light fixture in my home. Not only was he prompt, incredibly polite and clean, but he knew how to add the additional support I needed for the fixture without having to open the ceiling and do subsequent drywall repairs. I couldn't be happier with the job he did and would highly recommend him.

We hired David to either replace or repair the tile floor in our kitchen. He came in, diagnosed the problem, and gave us the information we needed to make an informed decision about what we wanted to do. We ended up replacing the entire floor, as the previous job was very poorly done. After removing all traces of the previous floor, he worked with us to design a pattern that is absolutely beautiful! We were so happy with the work he was doing that we extended the project to include a tile backsplash and under cabinet lighting. The end result is a kitchen renovation that is beautiful, down to the last detail! Throughout the project David was always very fair and honest with his billing. The job he did was worth every penny and then some! We will always call David first for any future home needs, and recommend him without reservation.

323 company has exceeded expectations! Chris was very responsive, came out to fix my plumbing issue shortly after I reached out, and even graciously agreed to help my roommate change her flat tire on his way out while she was in a pinch! I highly recommend hiring this company and will definitely use them for future plumbing issues/projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
