Our home repair required peeling off old tape, re-taping, mudding and sanding. Neal also blended the ceiling mudding to match the existing texture which saved us the burden of repainting the entire ceiling. He arrived promptly, kept the work area as clean as possible, considering all the sanding that needed to be done, and completed the job in a timely manner. If and when we need further repair work done on our home, we would contact Neal without hesitation.

He gave me a very reasonable quote and went above and beyond to clean my gutters, install gutter guards, and reattach guttering that had come off of my house in two places. Quoted me half of what another was going to charge and did an excellent job! I will definitely hire him again to do work at my home.

J. D. finished a "small" kitchen repair--quotes added only because even the most minor adjustment can set in motion all sorts of complications, and sometimes can be harder than a bigger job. He replaced a wall that was restricting access to the refrigerator, and replaced it with a beautiful, special-order wood panel. J. D. certainly didn't treat this as a small job, and took special care to finish everything to our satisfaction. He takes his work, and his reputation, very seriously, and works very diligently to make his customers happy. I would recommend Complete Solutions without qualifications.

Simply put, Scott is EXCELLENT! If you want value for your dollar, he's your guy. Punctual, professional, friendly, knowledgeable, everything we were looking for to help us manage our 5 acres of landscaping on a budget. And most importantly, Scott is extremely TRUSTWORTHY! I would trust this guy to watch my home and property any day of the week and would happily hand him the keys to any of my vehicles if I was out of town...yeah, he's that level of quality. Do yourself a favor and hire him. You won't regret it!

Mike did an amazing job! We just purchased a home and had him repair a dozen or so odd jobs around the house. He came over for an estimate and was able to come the following week for the repairs. He arrived on-time and the work was done well. We are very happy with the work and plan on using Mike again for other projects!

Alex started with a small job of gate repair - punctual on a Saturday, quite cost effective and terrific quality with multiple bags of mortar for the new fence posts. In the end, completed on time and excellent quality. This lead us to do a number of subsequent projects with Alex - Wood fence repair and paiting, wooden deck repair and paiting and driveway poqer washing and surface coating with paint. All jobs worked out quite well, with Alex providing guidance on the scope of work and completing these on time and under fluctuating weather conditions. Subsequently he also completed a job of rewiring outdoor electrical installation. Would recommend Alex for any work as he seems to know a variety of trades - carpentry, electrical, paint, etc. He is cost effective and very dependable.

Bryan was able to come out today to replace smoke detector batteries. There are 2 of the smoke detectors that require a special ladder for stairs. My mom and I are very pleased with B.Y.G. Home Improvement and will definitely call again with other jobs around the house.

Jeff & his coworker Terry did a great job for us. What started as door replacement turned into not only doors, but also some crazy, unexpected home repairs. Jeff was a perfectionist & made sure everything was just right. We highly recommend him & will definitely hire him again should the need arise.

Chris, Todd, and the other men who helped install our 6 ft privacy fence did a great job. They worked quickly and efficiently, even through some bad weather. They cleaned up when they were finished, and the fence looks great. They were attentive to details, especially when it came to the fence's purpose (for example, this fence was built to keep my dogs in, so I needed the bottom as low to the ground as possible). I would recommend Extreme Green for any fencing project, and I wouldn't hesitate to contact them in the future for other home repairs or improvement.

Very pleased with the work the guys at Miracle Repair did with our fence. We needed out fencing moved up so we could install a dog door, and they made it happen. They used our existing fence, so no new fencing was needed. We love our results and so do our animals. Looking forward to working with Miracle repair in the future. Thanks again!

Will did a great job for me. He worked on just about everything in my house. Started with drywall, paint, then stone work. Honestly I couldn’t of asked for a better job and a fair price. I could go on and on. These are just a few pictures of his work on my house after the wildfires took my old home away. Got me done on budget!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
