Brad tiled our new shower. It is 6" diagonal on the top with a 5" mosaic glass border and 12" running bond on the bottom. He built 3 niches and tiled them so they blended with the wall tile. Very meticulous and conscientious work. He will do it exactly the way you want it done as long as it is the done the right way. He will not be done till you are happy with the job. Brad is a great guy to work with honest and honorable. You will not go wrong in hiring him for your next project. He will keep you informed of when he will be there, when he is on his way. You will not be kept up in the air wondering what is going on when or if he is coming. Bottom line great guy, easy to work with, great work, and beautiful tile work. We normally do the work our self, but it was worth the money paid X10 to half it done right and beautiful.

Rod with Property Enhancements planted 18 Emerald Green Arborvitae for us down a fence line and around our fire pit. We posted the job on thumbtack and got several responses, but Rod was one of the first and gave a very fair estimate. After talking to him on the phone, he came out and gave me another estimate which was way better than what anybody else was offering. We had agreed to a price for 5 foot trees and Rod ended up finding better trees and driving to Chattanooga to pick them up for no additional cost. The job was done fast and efficiently, and there was no mess left behind. Rod came back out later that day to make sure I was pleased with the job and even texted me the following day with some additional suggestions. We couldn't be more happy with Property Enhancements work and will use them again, as well as recommend them to all of our friends and family. Thanks again.

Joe is the best. The man knows what he is talking about and shows up on time every time. Our lawn, plants and trees are beautiful. You get an estimate and there are no hidden charges. We got much more than our money's worth. Do not even think twice about using him. Integrity to the max. A real Blessing.

James grinded a stump on the side of my yard in preparation for a new garden bed. He helped me move some rocks from a previously built stacked stone border. I asked him to give me feedback on some other work I needed done which was very helpful. He did a terrific job, was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. His price was reasonable and consistent with his estimate. I highly recommend him and will definitely call him back to do additional work.

Danny helped me remodel an apartment in Knoxville. We were having a hard time selling and needed a face lift to appeal to buyers. His expert skills and competent work ethic eased our concerns. His knowledge of subcontractors and his ability to interpret our designs were directly responsible for the quick sale. His ethics, knowledge, honesty, extremely warm and friendly personality would not only cause me to use him again and again; which I have done...but, he could raise my children. I can always count on him to take the time to answer my questions and give me valuable professional, well trained, skilled, answers.

Automated Irrigation system. Raintree OutDoors custom designed a fully automated system for my house. I had been putting this off from some time due to the complecity, however Raintree Outdoors made this so easy I could hardly believe it. They even made a return trip to teach me how to use the system to its fullest extent. I am very happy with the work done and especially the customer service. I will be reccomending Raintree OutDoors to my neighbors because they are all asking about how good my yard is looking. :) Thanks again.

Victory tore out a bunch of overgrown flower beds, moved rocks to reshape the remaining flower bed, mulched, removed a couple of trees, seeded the new lawn area and aerated and overseeded the old lawn. Plastic and pine straw were put down as a long range plan to get rid of the English ivy. We had a terrific experience with Victory. They had good ideas, did the work quickly, cleaned up, and stayed within the quote--which was a very good price. No complaints at all.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
