Being born and raised in Sacramento, CA I am no stranger to unique challenges and experiences. My tennis career began at just 8 years old and I knew that was all I wanted to do: to be a “Tennis Doctor”. It takes 10,000 hours to become great and as a near-college graduate I can say that I have achieved my goals. Despite my years of coaching, high-level performance, and desire to become the greatest of all time, I was able to land a job in the Silicon Valley teaching tennis to children at government facilities. I began teaching tennis during my summer breaks and quickly rose to a level where I knew I could coach just about anyone given my skills and experience. I prepared to play NCAA Division 1 tennis for a major private university during that time as well. My dream was to become an Olympian and compete at Wimbledon but that was all pushed aside after a tendonitis diagnosis. However, I turned my passion into a business to help others and promote representation in tennis.See more

Samantha R. says, "Michael Mau has been an inspiration to me as a writer and an educator. His dedication to student excellence created a space where I could flourish as a writer and an actor. Later in life, I had the opportunity to perform in a reading of his many plays. Mau is meticulous in everything he does. He puts his best quality forward every time and his creativity knows no bounds. This unwavering dedication transformed the high schools he worked at. He put on hundreds of packed performances, fostering so many opportunities for student excellence. A thoroughly published writer and creator, Michael is a master editor. His opinions are based on decades of real experience and his depth of knowledge regarding English mechanics and pedagogy are unmatched. He’s honest and intentional. Anyone lucky enough to get Mau as a editor is receiving the highest quality feedback you can get for a ridiculously fair price. He’s the reason I believed enough in myself to be an English teacher and the reason I felt confident enough in my own voice to continue writing. I thank him now more than ever in my 5th year in education. As I enter my MFA program, I know my life, and the lives of so many writers, has been massively influenced by this impeccable creator."See more

Lindsay I. says, "What can I say? I hired James to help me with my Matron of honor speech as I was having a hard time focusing and getting it done. I was supposed to have meetings with other writers later in the day but booked James INSTANTLY! He was extremely professional, easy to talk to but most importantly I felt like I was communicating with a long time friend. He really listened to me and what my vision was for my speech. Not even a week later, HE WAS DONE! I wanted it to be funny and boy was it. I laughed so hard because it sounded like my own words. Without him listening to me, how I talk and what I envisioned, the speech wouldn't have came out this good. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. I'm so lucky to have found you!!! If only I needed more speeches, I'd hire you in a heartbeat!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
