I bought my home in July of 2012. The home didn't have a pantry. I had a space that was going to waste and was of no use at all in my dining room. Dan designed a pantry and used the existing wall beside the refrigerator which separated the dining room from the kitchen. Dan designed and build a pantry for that space. He kept a small part of the molding and fitted the pantry into the molding on two sides so that it appears that the pantry was built into the house as if it was original. I can't say enough good things about the workmanship on this pantry. He noticed that the door had more space at the top than at the bottom. He removed the door and adjusted it so that it fits snugly and perfectly. I would gladly recommend Dan for any design or repair work on any job, large or small. The home also had the original builder toilets in it. I had Dan replace both the master and guest bath toilets. He noticed that one of the toilets had a very small leak. Dan removed the new (and never been used) toilet and took it back to Lowe's and got a new replacement toilet and installed it. This shows the attention to detail that Dan exercises in all that he does.

I am a investor/builder, and am currently renovating a upscale craftsman home in the M-Streets. I had Rosalio hang all the sheetrock, tape and bed, and texture the whole 4bed 3bath house. It took them 3 days to hang over 150 sheets of 4'x12' sheets (and also over 40 4'x8' mold tough sheets, and about 30 3x5' durock sheets), and 4 days to tape, bed and texture. They were very professional easy to work with. Very high quality for a reasonable price. Will definitely use them again for my future projects. Thanks so much, Rosalio!!

I bought a gas oven from an online retailer and needed to find someone who would install it locally. Juan Ornelas bid on the job saying he needed more information, and then coordinated with me to find a time to look over the job. He made sure it would fit before I ordered the oven. Then he gave me a quote that was very reasonable--much less than what install.com would have charged. When the oven was delivered, Juan said he could be there the very next morning to install it. He brought another guy, and they had it hooked up in a short time. What helped me out a ton is that they did some carpentry to fill a hole in the floor that would have let vermin into the house. I know Sears or Lowes installers wouldn't have done that, and I would have had to find a carpenter. So all in all I was super pleased with Juan Ornelas and would recommend him highly. I now have a handyman for small jobs and will call on him again soon.

If I could give Ruben and his helper more than a 5 star rating I would! They are very skilled, patient, and strive for excellence, qualities that you seldom see today. Ruben is an EXCELLENT trim carpenter, and skilled at a level that you would expect to see only in a carpenter with many, many years of experience. I will certainly hire him for future projects.

Walter is an experienced carpenter. We had a leak in our sink and some resulting water damage underneath. He showed up, assessed the situation quickly and determined the best course of action. His repairs exceeded our expectations. He was very thorough and professional. We're very satisfied with his work and will be contacting his company again should the need arise.

Our project was to remove the protruding fireplace from our living room and put recessed oak shelves in its place. This involved demolition of the existing structure, moving the fireplace gas line for an outside grill, building an arch in the resulting recess, matching the existing wall and ceiling texture, painting the entire room, tiling the bare spot on the floor, matching the existing grout, and building / staining / installing the custom oak shelves. At first we were unsure about using a handyman company to do our living room remodel. We met with several contractors, and Brett (with Mr. Fixit Fast) asked the most questions, offered the most suggestions, and took the most measurements before committing to an estimate. We chose to work with Holly and Brett, and we were not disappointed. Brett was prompt in the morning and cleaned up after himself each day. Prior to and throughout the project he communicated with us exceptionally well; both via phone calls and texts. In the first week, during demolition, Brett discovered that the builder didn't make the ceiling joists long enough to be fully supported by the outside wall. Due to his care, he was able to catch their mistake and build a second set of supports just inside the outside wall's studs. Even with the second set of supports, the depth of the shelves was exactly the 12 inches that we wanted. The arch construction matches our existing arches throughout the rest of the living room because Brett actually traced one of them so that it would be perfect. Brett's grout color choice matches our existing grout perfectly, and the oak shelf stain matches our new couch and ceiling fan color. Every step of the project was done with great care and craftsmanship. I was home for a good number of days during construction, so was able to witness it first hand. The finished product looks amazing, and my wife and I couldn't be happier. We will definitely be using Mr. Fixit Fast for all of our future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
