Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

My fiancé and I had a wonderful dance lesson with Jackie! We are looking forward to continuing to have lessons here and learn how to waltz before our wedding!

My fiancé and I had our first dance lesson with Beata today, and she amazed us. First off, I'm not a dancer and don't enjoy dancing because I'm not good. We want a fun first dance remix, but I was worried that I wouldn't be able to pick it up. After speaking on the phone with Beata, her enthusiasm to work with us had me actually looking forward to our first lesson. We sent her our vision and first dance song, so she had an idea ahead of time what we were looking for. She took our vision and ran with it and put her touch in a way that worked really well for us. She's very, very personable and not overly technical. She is exactly what we needed since we aren't great dancers. She's accommodating and reasonably priced. She is very creative and puts her touch on your ideas to make for a perfect memorable first dance at our wedding. I am looking forward to our next lesson. She videod our moves for us so we can practice before we go in again. Highly recommend Beata to anyone, especially those who may be reluctant to step out of their comfort zone.
