I have been in trouble a few times in my life, and no attorney ever came close to what Eric Lim was able to do for me. I was falsely accused of a felony, while on probation. Eric was able to work miracles and get me out of what could have been some very bad situations. One thing I loved about him was how fast he always got back to me and kept me in the loop. Most attorneys would never respond to my questions and if they did it was from a paralegal. He was also really good at making me feel like everything was going to be ok when I thought my world was about to end. Turns out he was right every time. Eric was a pleasure to work with, very professional, very strategic, and hands down got jobs done I didnt think were possible. If you're up shits creek and are looking for the right help, Eric is your guy. I ended up being "no billed" and never indicted for my false accusation, and my revoked probation was overturned.

Very easy to work with. He explained the whole process for me and gave me several different affordable options. I wanted my divorce done as quickly as possible, and he came through. I'm very happy I chose to hire Mr. Spinks, and I will happily hire him again if his services are ever needed (hopefully not tho).

I cannot more highly recommend Illinois business and technology attorney Jacki Petrovic. I met Jacki while I was working on a project to bridge gaps in my company’s corporate technology contracts. I was very impressed with Jacki’s wealth of knowledge in business and information technology law. She understands how technology applies in the context of business operations and is excellent at identifying the issues that will matter to the business. Jacki leverages many years of experience in negotiating and assisting clients in achieving favorable contractual relationships and she takes a particular interest in helping clients achieve their goals while protecting their legal interests. Jacki also has an amazing ability to make all of her clients feel that they are a priority and she is great at multitasking to quickly deliver excellent quality work. I have worked with her for many years and anytime I get a call from a potential client needing a lawyer for a business or technology matter, Jacki is at the top of my list of recommendations.

I am beyond grateful for Diana Buss! I had contacted numerous other attorneys for assistance to get my fiancé out of jail due to warrants we were unaware of for a court case that was not dismissed as we originally thought. Many attorneys were unable to assist due to my fiancé being arrested in a different county from where the warrants were issued plus this wasn't the first time warrants were issued due to a failure to appear. I made one last effort to contact an attorney and that was Diana Buss. My main concern was to get my fiancé out of jail, but the bonds were extremely high and unaffordable even with help from a bail bondsman. Diana came up with a solution that none of the other attorneys had thought of, which was to just get the court cases dismissed instead of setting bond and THEN tackling the court cases. Not only did she come up with a solution that no other attorneys had mentioned, but she came through within a day! My fiancé was released and she got the charges dismissed! I have never seen an attorney work so fast! I absolutely love her! She is very responsive and so understanding. I feel like she really listens to all my concerns and addresses all my questions, and trust me I was a bundle of nerves so I asked her a million questions. She is my top recommendation for anyone looking for an attorney and she will be my go-to if I ever need representation. Hopefully I won't, but if I do I know that I will be in good hands. Thank you!!!

I have personally worked with Jarrod Smith and Brad Vinson during our time together in law school and afterwards. They are very smart, very dedicated, and are very hard workers. They are also good, ethical people. I have watched them build this practice behind the scenes and I know they have been and will continue to do a great job. Jarrod Smith spent some months as a prosecutor handling mostly DWI, but also a variety of other crimes. Brad Vinson is a young lawyer, but he has also already spent time in a courtroom (and did an amazing job representing his client!). I would never hesitate to recommend them to someone in need of a great pair of defense attorneys!

My family - my ex-husband, three children, and myself - moved here from the Northeast a couple years ago. After 15 years and raising our family far from here, we moved to Texas to be closer to my ex-husband's family. He left only months later and began a new family immediately. Being alone and having started a job within only days of him leaving was difficult, of course. I needed help and because my children were at that point considered residents of Texas, I couldn't legally leave with them. I was lost only temporarily. I spoke with a few people, and looked at varying options as far as legal representation. The day I met Lori Watson, was the day everything turned around. All of the difficulty seemed to have lessened. I knew my children and I would be fine and we were, and we are. I got everything in my proceedings that Lori told me I would. She communicated consistently, and though she had many other cases, I knew when I had a question, or needed advice, she was not far. She returned every call, every email, and with great speed. The sense of independence and control that I was hoping to feel and to take with me through such a horrible ordeal, Lori helped me to maintain, and it took me and my children through it, almost completely unscathed. My divorce was finalized just the beginning of this year, and for Mother's Day, my oldest daughter made me a card that told me not just that she and her siblings love me, but that I am the strongest person they know and they will grow to be strong because of me. I know my own level of strength and independence, but when your world suddenly seems to start crumbling, fear and insecurity are easily overwhelming. Lori helped me to get through that time, and to maintain what prompted those words from my daughter. I can't thank Lori enough. - Meredith

We're in Florida, needed a San Antonio lawyer and cannot be more pleased to have found Mr. Friedman. He handled all that we needed on a short-notice case, stayed within a reasonable budget, and -- importantly of course -- we prevailed. A nice, personable guy. I doubt I'll need a lawyer in San Antonio again, but we I do, there's no question I'll call him. If you're looking, do yourself a favor and at least contact him for an initial chat or review.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good real estate lawyer?

If buying or selling property feels overwhelming and the thought of finding a good real estate lawyer seems daunting, you’re in luck. There are some simple steps to follow for finding a trustworthy, affordable real estate lawyer to help with your property and legal needs.

    • Determine what kind of real estate lawyer you need. Many states require a real estate attorney to handle sale closing documents. For more complex matters such as a real estate deal gone awry or foreclosure, you’ll want to find an attorney who has successfully handled cases like yours.
    • Look for online reviews of real estate lawyers in your area. Verify that they have proven experience closing or winning cases like yours and that they are in good standing with the state bar association.
    • Choose two or three lawyers to interview. Many offer a free consultation to learn about your case and provide information about rates. For standard real estate closing services, in-depth interviewing might not be necessary.
    • Ask about their rates and whether they charge by the hour or provide services for a flat fee. Ask whether a retainer is required, and what the total bill should be for a case like yours.
    • Ask for a write-up of the services that will be covered by the projected costs.
    • Make sure you like the real estate agent and they treat you with respect. Confirm whether they or another person will be working on your case and make sure you’re comfortable with all members of their team.
    • Pay the retainer and hire your lawyer.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.

What does a real estate lawyer do?

A real estate lawyer represents their client’s best interest in all matters related to the sale, purchase and ownership of real estate. They are experts in real estate law. In states that require a real estate lawyer to close home sales, the lawyer must review and finalize all documents before the deal can be legally completed. Real estate lawyers also help clients legally protect their rights when entering, exiting or renegotiating a real estate deal. You can hire a real estate lawyer as an individual or as a business. A real estate lawyer can help with negotiation, addressing mortgage fraud, managing foreclosures and bankruptcy, transfers of titles and deeds, property ownership disputes, zoning issues, creating a co-ownership contract for joint purchase of a property, and much more. Real estate lawyers can also protect you from issues that result when a known problem was not properly disclosed by the previous owner. Overall, real estate lawyers are an added cost when it comes to buying and selling property, but they also ensure your best interests are met, and that you and the people you are doing business with comply with the law.

What kind of lawyer does wills?

No one likes talking about death, but it’s better than leaving your children or siblings to sort out your estate. A clearly planned will can make the time of mourning easier for everyone. An estate attorney will develop a legal will, create trusts on your behalf, and ensure the proper execution of your estate after you pass away.

Family attorneys and estate attorneys, also called probate and wills attorneys, can each prepare wills. The type of lawyer best suited to prepare your will depends on your situation. Most family attorneys provide services to prepare basic wills, including bequeathing property and personal items to family or naming a guardian for minor children. However, estate attorneys specialize in preparing wills in more complex situations. Consider hiring an estate attorney if you:

    • Have a large number of assets, especially those subject to estate taxes
    • Want to create a trust, such as allowing a spouse to live in your home until he or she dies and then leaving it to your children, or set up long-term care for a beneficiary
    • Have an ownership stake in a business
    • Expect someone to contest your will
    • Want to disinherit your spouse
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
