About
*Hello! I teach anywhere remotely via FaceTime/zoom, and am available in person in Austin Texas*
I have 17 years experience playing, a music degree, and love to teach as much as I like to play! I specialize in guitar/bass and 5-string banjo. I’ve performed on major US festival stages, and on the radio. I like to learn through music the student is excited about, and tailor the lesson style to each student. As a student of the science of learning, I know how the brain learns most efficiently and how to make skills stick!
As an audio engineer, producer, and session musician, I’ve worked and trained in both top tier studios and smaller project spaces, and have a have strong knowledge/experience base in production.

Bo is a fantastic instructor. I am not new to playing instruments but I’ve never tried banjo and I needed help getting started. I chose Bo to help me. As a seasoned musician myself, I found Bo’s approach to be very unique yet highly approachable. I was learning things that not only helped me progress on the banjo, but concepts that translated to my other instruments. I found Bo to also be friendly, professional, responsive and just an all around great guy. Taking banjo lessons with Bo was an absolute pleasure and made me want to keep learning. Since taking these lessons I have played with a professional group and was able to hold my own with confidence. If you want to learn Banjo, I cannot recommend Bo enough, he’s the guy you are going to want in your corner. I will absolutely be back for more lessons. Thanks Bo!

As a player who was starting with no experience, I highly recommend lessons with Bo. He is extremely patient, knowledgeable, and fun. I’ve been developing a deeper appreciation for banjo/bluegrass while progressing with songs a little faster than expected (with good encouragement). Bo is very responsive and always available for questions or help, and has been a pleasure to work with.

I was a total novice but Bo not only instructed on technique but provided very helpful context for reinforcing the purpose for using the specific technique. He’s exceedingly pleasant, courteous and patient.

I started taking lessons with Bo in January. Within that first lesson, Bo tuned himself into my musical understanding and immediately started to challenge me. He has consistently pushed me to strengthen weak areas of my musical understanding, like learn to listen and play by ear, or watch and try to replicate his patterns. Bo has such attention to detail. He cares about teaching the right techniques, and consistently redirecting you away from bad habits so that, long term, your skills can develop as advanced as you want them to. I look forward to my lessons with Bo every week, and know that I couldn’t have found a better teacher.

FAQs
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to talk on the phone or via FaceTime/zoom to meet, and get an overview of the students past history with music, however small or extensive, and learn what music they love/inspired them to play!
This is also a chance to discuss what lessons might look like, what materials would be good to get, and look at scheduling a first lesson.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Associates degree in music performance and technology, years of playing on stage, on the road, and in the studio!
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Over the years I’ve had people see me play and ask if I teach—I started teaching lessons at 15!
