Introduction: As a designer I look at both the big picture and the small details, from architectural elements down to the art and pillows. I love the process of combining a client's vision and lifestyle with the architecture and flow of the home. My work reflects my passion for design without ever looking fussy or overly stylized. What I love about interior design is the problem solving that's required, and creating rooms and spaces that make my clients say "Wow". Murphy has and continues to help us with our entire house. She is helping us repurpose our current furnishings and advising as to new purchases. Never having employed an interior designer I was intimidated! Murphy laid all my fears to rest. Creative, clever and artistic in her design advice she is down-to-earth and fun to work with. Murphy has done an excellent job and is exactly the right designer for us. She is practical, pragmatic, and incredibly talented as a designer. She let’s you know exactly what she thinks and why. She has taken on our very large project, discovered the look and feel we want and produced outcomes that are beautiful, individual to us, and highly functional for our family. We could not be happier with the results so far. We left another designer due to high charges and no results. Murphy’s fees are understandable and easy to pay because the design is so fabulous and her time is efficiently used. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this designer!

We hired Murphy to consult on all the details of our home renovation, including picking out materials, flooring, paint colors, lighting, and furniture. She was incredibly helpful in navigating the hundreds of options that are out there for each item, and steered us towards selections that were true to our original vision for the house. Murphy is very easy going, straightforward, and fun to work with. And her design sense is incredible! We would absolutely recommend Murphy for any interior design or decorating job.

Murphy Moon is a fantastic interior designer who happens to be strikingly good at couple's counseling. As new owners of a beautiful blank-slate home, my husband and I wanted to start the interior out right by coming up with a solid decorating plan. Unfortunately, with one of us favoring modern minimalism and the other preferring traditional with a touch of whimsy, we didn't get very far on our own. Enter Murphy Moon! From the very start, Murphy helped us to identify styles we both loved and new ways to create a space that's functional, comfortable, cool and lovely. When we were unable to find pieces we both liked or with the ideal measurements, she simply designed them herself and had them made! And the few times we couldn't seem to agree on something, Murphy always had an entirely different idea in her back pocket that was inevitably perfect. My favorite part about working with Murphy is that she approaches the project as a member of the team and inspires you to do the same. She doesn't try to take over or judge you or strong-arm you into anything. She listens to what you want, she helps you identify things you love and she works with you to create a space/a home/a plan that works. It sounds cliche, but she truly made our home a reflection of BOTH of us, only better. Add to that her obsession with detail; fluency in all ten zillion paint colors, wallpapers and fabrics; cheerful disposition; and ability to stick to a budget and I think you'll see why we truly can't recommend Murphy enough. (Not to mention the added benefit of letting her deal with stores/etc. who don't hold up their end of the bargain. She's such a sweetheart, until you cross her or her client. It's AWESOME.) We'd give her ten stars if we could.

FAQs

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
The first consultation is always free - I think it's important for us to chat and get to know each other before any work actually starts. My design fee is made up of an hourly design rate along with a small commission on purchases made through my firm. I send a monthly (or bi-weekly) invoice showing the itemized hours spent on a project so that my clients can see exactly what their money is being spent on. I don't want there to be any surprises, so I try to keep everything transparent and easily understandable. I currently have a $2000 minimum design fee.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I set up a time for us to get together to talk (at no charge, of course) about what they want and/or need, and I try to learn a little bit about their lifestyle and aspirations for their home. I also explain my services and the general design process and answer any questions they may have. Then, if they decide to work with me, I put together a 2 page design "agreement" outlining all my fees and the scope of the work as discussed. This agreement is a flexible document and can be adjusted to meet the client's expectations or particular concerns. As I said before, transparency is key to me.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied interior design at the Harrington Institute in Chicago back when it was just 5 rooms in a 19th century building on Chicago's famed Michigan Avenue. The elevator was terrifying, but the experience was excellent. Especially the architecture professor who got me excited about understanding the way houses are built. I was lucky enough to land jobs at some of the best design firms in Chicago and LA, where I soaked up as much experience as possible before starting out on my own in 2005.
