Ken at New Wave Resumes made my dreaded resume update an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I just relocated to Austin and needed a new polished resume to get started here. I had the honor of supervising Lisa Steffek when she worked as a writing consultant at the University of Texas Undergraduate Writing Center (UWC), the largest and busiest writing center in the country (with approximately 11,000 visits a year from writers across all disciplines). I can count the amount of teachers from my high school career who impacted me on one hand. Mrs. Wiatrek is one of them. There was no dreading her class or copying the homework from other classmates because I enjoyed it. I looked forward not necessarily to learning, but to what she was going to teach me. Today, many class sizes are so large that each student's individual education inevitably gets watered down, but I never felt that in Mrs. Wiatrek's class. I felt as important as every other classmate. I was never shy to raise my hand and ask questions because I knew that in that environment there were no stupid questions. Every question and every answer helped me grow. Mrs. Wiatrek never let us fall behind. When I was going through a difficult situation at home, my grades started dropping. Mrs. Wiatrek approached me and made me feel so accepted and understood. She wanted me to succeed. We made a plan together so I wouldn't fall behind in the class. When my grades went up, she was proud of me and I could feel that. Mrs. Wiatrek impacted me in so many ways. I found myself fast-walking to her class, eager for the next discussion. I found myself loving books I never would have ordinarily read. She made learning fun. She made reading interesting. She drove me to succeed by helpings me build goals and standards for myself and encouraging me to reach them. She expected a lot from us and did everything she could to inspire us and motivate us to meet those expectations. That classroom is my best memory from high school. It was a place where I found solace in books, where I felt capable, and where I learned valuable life lessons. What I learned in her class has helped me excel in my college career, and I know that without her class I would not have the knowledge and tools to succeed that I do today.
