About
Trained from an early age by my choir director grandmother, I grew up touring internationally as a frequent soloist with the Seattle Children's Chorus. When I began my studies at Berklee College of Music, however, I wanted to expand my techniques and repertoire beyond the classical realm. I focused on developing rock, pop, and contemporary vocal styles while also diving into Eastern European, Middle Eastern, and South Asian traditions. I began writing original music and formed a 6-piece band, with whom I recorded a full-length album and an award-winning EP, and performed across the country. I graduated from Berklee in 2011 with a BM in Professional Music & Voice. My love for music and cultures around the world carried me into graduate school at UT Austin, where I combined performance studies with academic research, taught undergraduate music courses, served as vocal coach for the Bereket Middle Eastern Ensemble, and earned an MM in Ethnomusicology. As a member of Pakistani/American fusion ensemble Sangat!, I traveled twice to perform at some of Pakistan’s most prestigious venues as well as for SXSW in Austin. In addition to private voice lessons, I also teach as a multi-instrument instructor with Mother Falcon Music Lab and Girls Rock! summer camps, and as a professional development facilitator of music-based teaching strategies for AISD's Creative Learning Initiative. I love working with students of all ages who are interested in establishing foundational vocal techniques, or advanced singers who are looking to expand their stylistic and technical range. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to create music, and that even those who don't think they have a "good voice" or "natural talent" can become confident by developing healthy and fun vocal practices!

Laura was very informative and helpful and made me feel very comfortable! I was skeptical since I’ve has a vocal coach in the past that didn’t provide much insight, but Laura put me at ease and I learned more from her on our first lesson than I did with him for a few months! She’s patient and I can’t wait to see how she helps me improve!

I have worked with Laura for a bit over a month now and I am gaining a lot from the lessons. She is very encouraging but also can find the sticking points towards growth and give exercises and demonstrations on how to improve them. Would definitely recommend.

Laura really came through for me on an extremely last-minute vocal project, and was able to quickly schedule as much time as she could offer. She is positive, warm, and communicates vocal concepts extremely well. She found the limits of what I thought I could do, and gently nudged me further. I have never had a vocal lesson in my life, so I really appreciated her adaptability and patience as I re-discovered my diaphragm, and tried to mentally dust-off my choir experience from twelve years ago. In our first session together, I remember thinking, wow, I had no idea my voice could do this. She learned the piece of music we studied together in no time at all, and for my seemingly impossible task at hand, we fine-tuned, worked on vowels, breathing, and enunciation, and together we turned a rough approximation of Kol Nidre into a beautiful liturgical moment that, a week later, people are still catching me to thank me for. I'm looking forward to working with her more.
