I hired Michael Rubin to handle my complicated Texas Divorce. I live many states away from Texas and Attorney Rubin was able to handle everything. My Ex and his pile of attorneys played every dirty trick in the book and may have added a few new ones. Attorney Rubin stopped them at every turn and I was awarded an amazing Divorce. I would recommend Attorney Michael Rubin to everyone, no matter how simple or complex.

Christie went beyond her way to help me out even though the prosecution and the CPS department lied like hell. I've noticed some attorney's lie their butts off like Amanda Coffey who first said one thing in court and then said another on a different court date. She had to defend me against Jennifer Hicks who couldn't even get her years straight to tried to build a character case. Christie was able to understand and even notice that they was lying and prepared herself for the BS that they was giving us in court. I would recommend her anytime you need a good attorney to represent you and your child as she is for the family not for the crooked system that's in Texas trying to steal kids for money which is going on everywhere in the world. Foster Parents should think about the kids and help keep the relationship with the parents instead of the money that they receive from the state. Being a Foster parent is a way of being a legal crook to steal kids and receive free money and services. Why doesn't the world focus on the illegal immigrants that don't have parents with citizenship being in foster care maybe our economy could be a little better and then we know that our welfare system is getting good use by providing the crooks (Foster Parents)with kids they can steal. Also Christie was affordable and didn't want my house, car, boat, or life to get the job done.

Avia and Felicia were on point! Loved how easy and flexible they were and helped me close a difficult chapter for me. Now I can move on to the next chapter in life with confidence. Thank you for facilitating the process and explaining everything with detail. Felt confident the first day I met with Avia. I thought it was going to be a dreadful experience like previous lawyers, but on the contrary she took her time to explain the process and answered every question I had. Thank you! Thank you so much!

Mr. Len Nary is personable and is the consummate professional. He is an experienced attorney to whom I would not hesitate in recommending in the highest degree. He is a compassionate attorney that helped my family through a very difficult time. He treated us with dignity throughout the bankruptcy process and made an unpleasant experience tolerable. I cannot say enough about his credibility and performance. There is not a more articulate and knowledgeable bankruptcy attorney out there. In retaining Mr. Nary, you can be rest assured and have confidence that he will handle all your bankruptcy needs. Thank you very much!

Ross Tew is a terrific estate planning attorney with reasonable rates! He handled our complete Trust, Wills, Powers of Attorney, and more in a professional, timely manner. He took the time to come to our house and fit into our busy schedule and even came to our location for signing papers. He answered all our questions in a way we could understand legal issues and gave us confidence in everything he did. He is not always easy to reach, because he values his family time, but came through for us, even during the holidays.

EXCELLENT service and AMAZING / EXPERIENCED attorney. My husband had been FALSELY accused of a sexual assault, a very strange story with many twists, so we had to make sure go go with the BEST attorney out there. Before deciding to go with Jeff I had met with many other local attorneys, of which I felt were reputable. But we also felt that our case was just going to be handed off to a lower, newer , less experienced lawyer that would work and do the case (as in subcontracted out). Jeff gave us the feeling he was able, experienced, and ready to fight for us. I like his military background and ethics. I am sure if I had not seeked out his services the outcome could have been very different . Needless to say we got the ( NOT guilty verdict ) and I am not so sure it would have turned out that way he would have used someone else or even the public defender. Lawyers have their fees and sometimes you have to sacrifice but what's the alternative, maybe being put away for 10-20 years --maybe even life for something you didn't do? I know if I ever need him again I won't hesitate to call or recommend him to anyone. Thank you Jeff for not only being such an amazing attorney but also our counselor when things got scary. We will forever be grateful for you. Thank you Jeff for getting our family back and letting our 3 kids have their dad back! Anyone that reads this please don't put you or your loved one's freedom at risk, it's priceless... Put your trust in Jeff like our family did. He's the best out there.

A friend referred me to Jeff after I shared with her that my case was exceptionally complicated and since then he has been by my side for over two years. During that span, my ex husband has had three attorneys, all with different ideas of legal maneuvers they could use to beat Jeff, yet here I am in an even stronger position than when I first hired him. I have found Jeff to be a master at strategy, excellent at communication and incredibly loyal throughout this entire process. I read recently that most people go through 2-3 attorneys during a typical family law case, but I cannot imagine having an attorney other than Jeff. I’m sure many lawyers can handle simple cases just fine, but if your case has as many moving parts as mine, I cannot stress enough that Jeff is your guy.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.

What should you look for in a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer will advocate for your legal rights if you’ve been hurt in an accident at work or in daily life, have suffered from medical malpractice, or are struggling to have your insurance carrier cover your needs. It may be helpful to talk with two or three lawyers before selecting one. When looking for a personal injury lawyer, research their reviews and make sure former clients have had good experiences with them. Next, make sure the personal injury lawyer has experience and proven success winning cases similar to yours. Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to provide services in your state. When you find a qualified personal injury lawyer with whom you want to work, freely discuss payment and fees before any work begins. Most lawyers offer a free consultation to learn what your case is about and explain their rates. Personal injury attorneys typically receive a percentage of your settlement (called a contingency fee), so they are paid after the trial or case is complete. Keep in mind that some attorneys have fees that you must pay even if you don’t win your trial. It’s important to understand these details before work begins so you don’t have any unhappy surprises later. Lastly, it’s wise to choose a personal injury lawyer that you have confidence in and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.

How do you find a good immigration lawyer?

Research is key to finding a good immigration lawyer. The immigration process can be overwhelming and complex, so a trustworthy advocate is critical. When you have identified several eligible candidates, verify their immigration law license to protect yourself and your finances. Once you have a set of licensed immigration lawyers in mind, choose one based on these considerations:

  • Mutual respect: You want an immigration lawyer who treats you and your family with kindness and consideration. You’ll do the same for them.
  • Availability: Before hiring, note if they have responded promptly to your emails and calls. You don’t want to hire someone you have to chase around.
  • Proven success: Read former client reviews and research their success rate with cases similar to yours.
  • Transparent rates: Ask directly about what their rates are, how they bill, and what they estimate your legal fees will be. Ask if they will sign a fee agreement, and get receipts for all fees paid.
  • Verify who will handle your case: Sometimes junior lawyers work on firm cases. This is okay, as long as you have discussed it and are comfortable with it. When junior lawyers or paralegals are working on your case, ask if the hourly rate is lower.
  • Be wary of anyone who promises you specific results: No case is certain, and the immigration lawyer should be honest about what you can expect.

How much does an immigration lawyer cost?

Immigration lawyers are experts in the nuances of the highly complex United States immigration system. They help clients of all backgrounds petition for immigration status and become U.S. citizens, and can represent clients who are facing deportation or detention. Nationally, the cost people pay for immigration lawyers averages $500-$1,010. The services you need will have a huge effect on your costs. For routines cases, such as applying for a travel visa, an immigration lawyer may be able to confidently quote you a set price, while more open-ended cases may be billed at an hourly rate of $200-$500, or more, depending on the reputation and experience of the firm and lawyer. Before hiring an immigration lawyer, ask what their plan for your case is and what expected costs may be. Many immigration lawyers work from retainers, and request a set amount of money upfront from which to work. For example, a lawyer who charges $300 per hour may estimate $4,000 for a standard family-based immigration case, the common process in which a U.S. citizen petitions for permanent residency for their spouse, fiancee or family members.
