Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does countertop installation cost?

The national average for countertop installation is $2,147, but this cost can fluctuate depending on the type of countertop you want. Countertops made out of granite, marble, quartz, laminate, soapstone and even recycled glass will all have different costs.

The color and patterns may also have an impact, particularly you choose a natural stone with rarer colors or patterns available. The size and type of finish all play a role, too. Keep in mind more customized edges, complex shapes and cutouts will add to the cost.

To understand how much your new counters will cost, talk to contractors and countertop installers near you. Request free estimates so you can properly budget for this project.

How long does countertop installation take?

Countertop installation generally takes a couple of days, though some companies say it could take less than one day and closer to a week. It all depends on the demand the pro is dealing with.

If it's a remodel job, then it will take time to remove the existing countertop. The pro will then need to make cutouts for things like sinks and electrical outlets. After shaping the countertop in their shop, they will bring it in — typically in several sections — and place it and seal it. After fitting sinks, outlets and appliances into the countertop, they will seal the seams.

When you're requesting price quotes from countertop specialists, ask them how long it will take to install your new counters.

What's the most durable countertop?

Countertops made out of natural stones — such as granite and quartz — are the most durable. These materials are nearly impervious to heat, knife cuts, scratching and staining.

I would give a 5 star for the work quality/value. The countertops turned out beautiful. Great value and work quality. The contractors were fast installing the cabinets, cleaned up well afterwards and everything looks great. My only complaint is the lack of a clear installation date. My husband was told Saturday; I was told maybe Friday or Saturday. We had vacation plans so ended up cancelling due to the unknown and didn't want to take the chance of something going wrong. Ended up getting a call on Wednesday saying they were ready to install could someone meet at the house. Luckily my husband was off and could accommodate. I would use them again, but I know I need to be aware the installation date will probably change.

I am very pleased with the bathroom counter we had installed. The reason for a four, instead of five star, review is the lack of proficiency by the two men that came out and measured and then returned to install. They were both very nice and pleasant, but the lead guy was very hard to understand and had a difficult time explain things and answering my questions when they came to measure. When they came to install they seemed disorganized and unprepared. For example, they had to make some cuts in the granite and they asked for ice and the use of my vacuum. My vacuum was returned with a thick goopy mess in the canister. Also, one of the guys couldn’t get the faucets removed from the previous sink due to careful planning and not having the correct wrench. My husband offered to help and provided the needed tool. Once my husband started working on the other sink, the guy got up and left my husband to remove both faucets. I also had to ask them to reinstall the mirror they took down. Again, I love my counters. I would recommend HMC to anyone needing granite countertops. There were just a couple of things that were uncomfortable during the measuring and installation.
