Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

Contact several gate repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your gate.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

I found Madrid Fencing through Thumbtack and contacted for a quote for replacing my fence gate which was sagging since the fence posts were rotten. Bernice responded immediately within a hour and came by the same day afternoon to take a look and give me an estimate. She suggested that replacing the gate would be better since the wood was already rotten in other places as well and she suggested to go with the metal posts instead of wooden posts for long lasting durability. Juan arrived 2 days later and did a very good job on removing the existing gate and installing the metal fence posts and building a new gate. They were on time, did a very good job and cleaned up well after themselves once the job was done. I would highly recommend Madrid Fencing for any fence related services.

I got a bid the same day he came out to look at my old fence and give me an estimate. I was able to set up an appointment to replace my back fence as soon as I was done teaching summer school. The crew came out and did a great job cleaning up after they were done. I love my new fence.

We asked Dan to build us a high definition privacy fence along with a drive gate that was "invisible" from the back of our home. Boy, did he deliver! He built us a beautiful fence at a good price. He also put in pavers in our yard for storing trash cans and eliminating a mud pit! We couldn't be happier! Quick, high quality, and affordable! Thanks Dan and Veteran Fence!

If you need a fence repaired or replaced... don't go to a fence installation contractor. You will pay double the price. I contacted a number of contractors for repair of our boundary fence. Fully half didn't bother responding to my voice mail - I assume the job was too small. Of the four that actually responded, three were fence installation contractors and one was fence repair - Al. I could tell from the quote he sent me, he knew his business. There was no guessing. He quoted in linear feet and per post. When asked, he came out immediately to review the job and confirm the price and started working the next day. We were so pleased with his work quality, work ethic, and knowledge that we expanded (doubled) the work. He was able to do it all in two days. We are planning on having him come back to repair another part of the fence soon. Don't waste your time... hire Al for your fence repairs and replacements. He loves what he does, it shows, and you will not regret it.

Obviously a well-oiled business. The team knew exactly what was going to happen when, got the work done as committed, cleaned up after themselves quite nicely (not all fence businesses do that...). The fence is beautiful, and the new cedar pickets smell just marvelous, too :-). Thanks to Travis for the team's work!

Was going out of town for a few weeks and Al couldn't get to my project before I left due to his backlog caused by a severe storm. Repaired my fence while I was gone and did terrific job at a reasonable price. Would highly recommend Al for any fence work you may have.

I had part of my fence knocked over by high winds and needed a quick replacement as it had not been changed in over 20 years. I looked at different contractors and some were somewhat expensive and using pine and other were cheap, but you could tell they had limited experience working fences and I live in a curb, so it was important the work looked professional. Absolute Fence and Gate gave a quick estimate that was well within the ballpark of the overall cost, were extremely patient answering some questions and concerns and did a quick turnaround (over 100 feet of fence plus a gate in 5-6 hours). The materials used were of good quality (Cedar for the pickets and compressed pine for the posts) and when I had some concerns about a couple of the pickets, they had no issue replacing them. Overall it was a very good experience.

I had been trying to find a fencing company to consult on repairing a leaning fence. My budget was limited and lumber costs today make a full replacement out of the question for me this year, so I just wanted to replace the posts. More than one company told me that they don't do small jobs like mine, that I should find a handyman for my project instead. I put out my request on Thumbtack and Madrid was the first company to respond. I was given a price based on the number of posts I needed replaced and scheduled for the following day. It was so straightforward and simple. The team arrived and took care of my leaning fence in record time. They left it clean and Bea talked to me throughout the process if there were any concerns or issues I needed to know about. When I have the budget for the full fence replacement, Madrid is the company I will use and recommend to anyone I know. TL:DR - Madrid did quality work at a fair price, quickly and professionally, regardless of the size of the job. Highly recommended.

Jesus has been awesome to work with so far. I submitted my request for bids on a replacement fence on Sunday. He called the next day at exactly the time I requested through Thumbtack. He was able to provide me a per linear foot estimate immediately and then came out that same day to measure for a more accurate price. His estimate came in much lower that the others I received. He removed my old fence and installed a new one just 3 days later (yesterday) and is expected back out today to stain it. To summarize, from the time I asked for professionals on Thumbtack to the time my entire fencing project will be complete only spanned 5 days! I have been very happy with his responsiveness and the quality of his work. I highly recommend him and his company!

Al came out and did a great job on taking care of a few problem areas on our fence. He was able to break down what needed to be done, along with making recommendations of things to keep my eye on in the future (without pressuring or even asking to add it to the list that absolutely needed fixing). Will definitely recommend and use again.

Al installed a 45” gate and approximately 5’ of fencing to close a gap in an existing fence. Total job took 2 days to complete. I think it took 2 days to allow the cement to cure overnight on the two new gate posts. Al did a good job for less than originally quoted. Al identified options for saving me money but I had the final decision. I had some specific and unusual requirements for the job. Al met those requirements once they were clearly understood. For those aspects of the job where I did provide clear specific requirements, Al asked a few questions and delivered a quality job. Al took over a day to return my initial call but I am glad I waited. Al could check his voice mail a little more frequently.
