Mike installed hot and cold water supply valves and drain plumbing connectors needed for the laundry utility sink in my laundry room. Mike connected all the plumbing for the sink and he secured the sink to the wall. Very nicely done!

They did a great job installing a shower valve with a new hot cold faucet. It had to be done from a wall and the wall had to be patched up. We will use them again.

I bought my home in July of 2012. The home didn't have a pantry. I had a space that was going to waste and was of no use at all in my dining room. Dan designed a pantry and used the existing wall beside the refrigerator which separated the dining room from the kitchen. Dan designed and build a pantry for that space. He kept a small part of the molding and fitted the pantry into the molding on two sides so that it appears that the pantry was built into the house as if it was original. I can't say enough good things about the workmanship on this pantry. He noticed that the door had more space at the top than at the bottom. He removed the door and adjusted it so that it fits snugly and perfectly. I would gladly recommend Dan for any design or repair work on any job, large or small. The home also had the original builder toilets in it. I had Dan replace both the master and guest bath toilets. He noticed that one of the toilets had a very small leak. Dan removed the new (and never been used) toilet and took it back to Lowe's and got a new replacement toilet and installed it. This shows the attention to detail that Dan exercises in all that he does.

Jason was running late but called me in plenty of time to let me know. Then he called me again approximately 30 minutes before arrival. Once at my place, it took him about 20 minutes to complete the job of hanging a new 55" TV to a brick wall on my patio. Price was very reasonable and Jason did a great job. I would recommend JWR services to anyone that asks me for a reference

I am probably one of the most "picky, detailed oriented and incriminating" of all clients, or that anyone can ever experience in their life! In fact, I am so "Picky" about repairs; drywall, textures and paint, probably most everything about a job, I do not trust most people to even do my jobs, and end up doing most everything myself. I am explaining and saying this because, I give credit where it is due, and can not say enough to praise Mr. Rosalio Gamez and his incredible team (Gamez Drywall & Repair) for their EXCELLENT work! I can not say enough about Rosalio and his team; They arrived promptly, and did everything, and more, than expected. They were quite, courteous, polite, very detailed oriented, worked in sequence with one another, as the great team they are, cleaned up as they go and made sure everything was completed and satisfactory before leaving. I have NEVER experienced a team that works together so well and hard, and did everything to perfection, specifications and to my satisfaction, no questions asked, and had very fair pricing. I had various home projects that needed done, which included; Kitchen Demo (removal) to a built-in-wall & shelving unit, kitchen cabinets, counter and back splashes, all baseboards, carpet and tile removal from my kitchen, dining room, living room and stairs, commode and sink and tile floor, removed and hauled off, (they even repaired my sink valve and went to Home Depot to pick up necessary supplies as needed and they took old kitchen cabinets to my storage building!), among many other CONSTRUCTION REPAIRS to include; Drywall Cracks, Ceiling and Nail Pops repaired (which, by the way, he used screws and reinforcements, which was done correctly and not just a quick fix like most repair people would do!). His drywall repairs and textures, matched to perfection. The new ceiling and wall painting, on my 20' walls, along with the perfect paint lines, up against the ceiling paint was PERFECT, just to name a few of the projects that were done to perfection. He preformed all construction quickly, and supplied the very best quality and expertise bar-none! There is no short-cuts with Gamez Construction, Drywall and Repair. You get the very best, quality, and a professional job, anyone could ever ask for! It was a pleasure to have Rosalio Gamez and his wonderful team work in my home! He was both professional, gracious, respectful and courteous through-out the entire job, all the way to the end. My house was as clean after the job as when it had been before. If you need drywall, or any construction repair, and/or painting job, ask expert, Rosalio Gamez. He's by far the very best in the industry! I would highly and strongly recommend Rosalio Gamez & his incredible team, which I do not do easily. He went above and beyond the Scope of Work and Quality and Perfection! I just hope, when I need his services again, which will be soon; for marble and tile work, he will come back to me! Rosalia, if you see this, please forgive me for putting you through the wringer, being so hard on you and your team, and Thank You! You have my full trust and respect now, Rosalio! You are a real trooper! Thank you again! Iris Selasky

Gerardo is a gem, and I will definitely hire him again, and recommend him to anyone looking for a handyman. I am amazed at all the different jobs he can do from plumbing, painting, caulking, washing windows, power washing house, etc. Gerardo worked hard repairing a small crack in my ceiling and matching the paint, so I wouldn't have the expense of repainting the whole ceiling. He did the same touch up paint on walls and cabinets throughout the house, and epoxy painted my white refrigerator to make it look brand new. He and his partner worked many hours to make sure everything I asked them to do was done correctly and that I was completely satisfied. The cost of his work is very reasonable too! Gerardo not only did an outstanding job, but he was very dependable. He completed the job in two days, arrived on schedule, and called each time that he was on his way. Gerardo is a very kind and respectable man, and I highly recommend him!

Frank was the first of several contracted me about this bathroom wall and floor tile project for my adult son's home in Garland. As a retired building contractor with 40+ years of experience, I am very pleased with the professionalism that Frank and his crew demonstrated as reported to me by my son Charlie. Well done Frank Bonilla.

I am very happy with the result of the project, and highly recommended Gustavo and his team. His team comes in time, gives very competitive price, and get the wall painting done on time and with high quality. He even helped with fixing my broken glass windows, and touched up some other areas. Overall a very honest and reasonable person to work with.

JR and his partner were great. I hired them to install some clothing racks in my second bedroom (to turn it into a closet) and hang my jewelry rack on the wall. They did both quickly and efficiently, troubleshooting for a couple of bumps along the way. They even took a look at a problem I had with my back gate and fixed it - for a totally reasonable rate. Great experience - will definitely use them again when I need more work done to my place.

Carlos was awesome. We wanted a wood panel accent wall built in the study. High quality work at a reasonable price. Not only was the work excellent, but Carlos was very courteous, respectful, and professional. He kept in contact with me, and let me know the status of the work being performed to prep the wood (with pictures), and let me know when he was on his way for the install the next day. As some of you may have experienced with some contractors, they aren't always the best communicators. Not a problem with Carlos. We are going to be having more work done to the house soon, and will be hiring Carlos to do it. He takes pride in his work, and sadly, that's becoming harder and harder to find these days.

Angel and his men worked on turning a load bearing wall into a kitchen island. We are very pleased with the end result. We chose Angel as our contractor because he was very knowledgeable about his work, professional, courteous and on time with his estimate. Once they started work, I appreciated the fact that they were very punctual and did not waste time at all. Their attention to detail and commitment to the job made the project go by very smooth. I also appreciate his genuine effort at working within our budget.

Luis and his crew did a great job on our house. We needed help removing popcorn on our vaulted ceilings, and wanted it retextured before we moved in. Luis came out ahead of time and gave me different estimates, depending on how much we wanted, and didn't push us to do more than we could afford. When they were there they got straight to work and were very respectful of the other things going on in the house. Luis even patched up a spot we messed up on the wall in one of the other rooms, and it looked great! We plan to use Herrera's Painting again in the future as we want more work done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.
