Introduction: Fifteen years of guitar instruction (and a WHOLE lot more of playing!) - all ages, all styles, electric, acoustic. Reasonable rates, patient, knowledgeable and thorough. Lesson plans and practice schedules provided. I focus on a complete knowledge of the instrument, chords, scales, theory, and songs, but at the same time, customizing lessons to fit the individual student's goals. After getting the basics down, we will focus on what YOU want to play!! I love getting students excited about learning and playing! Playing an instrument is a lifelong endeavor - there's always more to learn and areas to improve upon. So many students have had fits and starts, not having a decent "road map" or a view of the "big picture" - even after months of lessons with other instructors. I feel it's my job to not only teach the "nuts and bolts", but also keep the student focused on their ultimate goals, not mine! My only goal is to help you become the BEST guitarist you can be and develop a love for playing!! Whatever your goals are - fun with family and friends, performance, composition or whatever, I believe that with my help, you can achieve them!!

I have been playing guitar for 10 years, often using tabs or song books from the internet. During this time, I was never able to make my playing sound like the song, which was discouraging. Lessons with Dennis gave valuable insight not only to what I was doing incorrectly, but also how to practice to make my playing better. Techniques that are not covered in any books that I read, or the videos that I watched were invaluable in improving my skills. Dennis also uncovered tabs for songs that teach a certain technique (e.g., pull-offs in 'Time' by Pink Floyd); Dennis also took the time to not only find the tab, but also fixed the tab and put together an arrangement. Each class Dennis gave was packed with new techniques, new songs, and discussion. One class was not enough to absorb all of the information. However, Dennis also would send out videos covering the points covered in the class. I found these videos HUGELY helpful in actually learning the material. As a parent of 2 kids with a lot of activities, and a full-time job, competing priorities often caused a time conflict. Dennis was flexible with timing of classes, and even if a class was postponed, if there was a question that I had, an email would come back from Dennis, with either an explanation or a video to help. I cannot recommend Dennis highly enough. I was skeptical about how well long-distance and video learning guitar would work, but Dennis has put a lot of work in to adapting to the new normal, and I am learning a lot! PS. He is also fun to converse with!

Dennis is the best guitar teacher you will find who really knows how teach you how to play guitar, not just showing you licks or only songs you want to learn. First he provides you a workbook he has put together that gives you a reference for the fundamentals of technique, basic guitar theory, and most importantly, how and what to practice. As a teacher he meets you where you are in terms of skill level and what you’re interested in learning. He allows you to learn at your own pace. The lessons are always fun and productive. They often go a bit overtime since Dennis is personable and seems to really enjoy getting to know his students. He also sometimes provides you videos recapping your lesson or backing tracks to practice with. I have recommended him to everyone I know who is interested in really learning how to play and develop their skills, and I highly recommend him to anyone reading this review.

I am a self taught guitarist and I’ve played guitar for a very long time. I got stuck in a serious rut in terms both creativity and improving my skills. Working with Dennis has been great and has really opened my eyes to what I had been doing wrong all of these years. I highly recommend, if you’re looking for lessons, reaching out to Dennis. I could not be happier with the progress so far!

Dennis was the best pick out of all my options due to the value and the interest he showed to teach my son guitar. For being the first time choosing a guitar instructor over the distance, I think is a great deal. Can’t wait to see mu son progress to keep it going.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My pricing system is the same for all students - the only difference will be if I have to travel to your home, there may be a travel upcharge.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

With most students, I begin with the basics - parts of the guitar, scale up the neck, how the guitar works, etc. I then move in to posture, proper ergonomics, and rhythm exercises. From then, we move into first position chords - majors, minors and sevenths Gotta know these frontwards, backwards, and in your sleep! Pentatonic scales are next, followed by barre chords, scales, and then more advanced techniques. Along the way, music theory is being "sprinkled in" and, as you learn certain chords and scales, you'll learn songs that will help you apply what you're learning!

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Like most of my students, I really don't have any formal musical training. I've jammed forever and played in a number of bands around the Metroplex. I've learned much of what I know the hard way and had to break some bad habits along the way, but that's to YOUR advantage because I'll make sure you don't develop these bad habits!!
