- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
TIPS FOR SELECTING A TILE CONTRACTOR A good tile installer can make your tile look great and last for years; therefore, choosing the right tile contractor for the job is an important first step for any home remodel project involving tile installation. Here are some things to look for in selecting a tile contractor so you can ensure you get the quality tile installation youre looking for: EXPERIENCE / Not all tile or projects are created equal. There are numerous types of tile applications ranging from tile floors, tile backsplashes, tile showers and tubs, tile countertops, tile fireplace surrounds, tile murals, etc. Tile projects also vary in terms of size and complexity. The various types of tile that can be installed are equally if not more diverse than their many applications and there are many options to choose from including: Ceramic Tile, Natural Stone Tile, Mosaic Tile, Glass Tile, Slate Tile, Marble Tile, Granite Tile, Quartz Tile, Limestone Tile, Porcelain Tile, Terracotta Tile, Travertine Tile, Saltillo pavers - to name a few! The point here is different types of tile and their application require different skills or installation methods and you want to ensure the tile contractor youve selected is experienced with the material and application that your home remodeling project requires. REVIEWS / Ask to see reviews or testimonials from previous customers the tile contractor has performed work for and ensure these are representative of the quality installation and professional service you are seeking. REFERENCES / A good tile contractor will also be able to provide you with references, upon request, of previous customers, interior designers or general contractors that he has worked with that will vouch for his tile installation services. PICTURES / Ask for pictures of past tile installations. This is just another way to be sure the prospective tile contractor is competent and capable of delivering a quality tile installation. FREE ESTIMATES / Have the tile contractor physically come to your home or business to give you an estimate for your tile installation. That way he will be able to take measurements and inspect the job so you wont have any surprises come up later that could affect the cost of your project or the length of time it will take to get it done. The estimate provided by the tile contractor should: a) be written, b) clearly list each of the services being performed, c) clearly list the type of materials to be used (tile, grout, etc.), d) should list the warranty provided and e) above all it should be provided free of charge. WARRANTY / Ask your prospective tile contractor about the warranty offered on his work. This should minimally be 1 year and should be given in writing as part of his estimate. This point is primarily for your own peace of mind that the contractor will stand behind his product. CLEAN UP / Ask the tile contractor how they handle the clean-up of a tile installation project and if they haul away all debris from the job. Any professional tile installer will tell you that leaving a job site cleaner that it was found when the job started is paramount and that this includes hauling away 100% of job related debris. Not doing so is not only a nuisance to the customer but can be costly as well. SEALING TILE & GROUT / Imperative to a quality tile installation that will last for years is preserving the tile and grout with a chemical sealant. Some tiles & cement based grouts are porous, so can stain easily and are difficult to maintain unless properly sealed. Not all tile contractors seal their tile or grout after installation and so you should ask about this specifically to ensure it will be done and is included in the price quoted. INSURANCE / It is important that the tile contractor you hire carries his own liability insurance so that you are protected against any possible mishap during the course of the job. Again, the main point of this is your own peace of mind. MULTIPLE BIDS / You should get multiple estimates for the tile work you want done. It is important to ensure that each of the bids are consistent in terms of project scope, material to be used and services provided (such as sealing the grout and tile [if needed], removing trash/debris, etc.) so you get an apples to apples comparison. The bids you receive should be relatively comparable; beware of extremely high or low bids and select the tile contractor that has the best combination of price and satisfied customers.
