I was a 56 year old man that finally decided to learn to play an instrument instead of spending my life wishing I could play an instrument. Being a product of the 70’s, I’d always had a desire play a bass guitar in a rock and roll band. I feel very fortunate to have stumbled upon Mark Black and Promethean Studios. From the beginning, my desire has been to learn how to play music not just become a human jukebox. Under Mark’s guidance for the last year and a half, I feel I am achieving that goal. Even though I know I have hardly scratched the surface of the musical universe, I was able to quickly hold my own with a band of experienced grey beards I play with regularly. Mark has proven to me he is an experienced teacher with a solid approach to teaching music that fits my needs. Mark also has a dry wit that keeps each lesson interesting. I would definitely recommend Mark to anyone with a serious interest in learning music.

Adam Frost is one of the best songwriter guitarist tutors. His great skills to teach music come from previous studies in UNT, USC, Berklee and MI. He was also influenced by Nirvana, Envy of the Coast, Monuments, Michael Jackson and some others great bands. So I highly recommend him as a teacher! :)

I first contacted Mark after seeing an online advertisement for piano lessons in the Addison area. I mentioned to him that I was interested in learning piano and had absolutely no knowledge of piano, although I did have a background in music as a vocalist and trombonist for a band in college. He cheerfully followed up with me and had me come in to the piano gallery for a preview lesson, introducing me to the basics and making recommendations on keyboards and music. After only a few months of lessons I was on my way to a newly discovered passion. Mark has been instrumental in advancing my musical abilities and has been extremely flexible in scheduling lessons, as well as very adaptable to my abilities.

Sebastian and Sean were beyond what we hoped for. They were extremely kind and professional, played a wide range of music (both extremely talented), and were also interactive with the party. People of all ages were impressed and they even stayed late and kept playing due to popular demand. Will definitely hire them again for our next event. Thank you!

Brandon and Jackie were such an amazing addition to our wedding!! We were very casual and fairly unorganized, but they brought talent and professionalism to make our big day even more special!! There were compliments galore from guests on "our" music choice, which Jackie and Brandon completely picked themselves. If we could get married again we would definitely hire them! Thank you both for being so laid back and flexible!!

Mark is a good player and more than good enough to teach beginners through expert players. Never intimidates, and has a good way of explaining the basics of playing. Always on time for appointments and very professional.

My Husband & I hired Coby to perform at our Wedding in April 2014. First & foremost Coby was extremely accommodating of the songs requested & how he could help DJ our Wedding in between the live performance during the reception. Our guests couldn't get enough of the band! My Husband & I were beyond pleased with his entire performance along with his band members. Coby will always be our go to band for events. Down to Earth guy who is a crowd pleaser. We look forward to the next event we schedule with Coby. He made a Brides perfect day even more perfect. A year later & our guests still talk about the great entertainment. I'd be glad to provide details to anyone considering hiring Coby. He comes highly recommended by a couple who hired him for a special day in our life's.

Very professional, bends over backwards to satisfy the audience and rarely sings at Appolonia's without folks begging to hear more. I have been privileged to hear Gino both in his bands and showcasing his Sinatra and Standards and would highly reccommend him for your entertainment needs and events.

The job is playing all different types of music in a small band. What I think went well was the amount of stuff we were able to complete in a short time, but I also think the rehearsal times could be longer.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
