We needed our ice maker replaced, and Daniel had the experience to know that sometimes it is not JUST the ice maker causing the problem. He was able to replace our water valve also, and things are back on track just like that. We are so glad to have found him!

In order to get some relief from the heat, I was only requesting freon replacement. The technician Brandon, advised me of the minimum cost, after checking the unit, inside (attic) and outside (condenser). He also verified that the culprit was a coil leak. Work quality, professionalism, responsive ness, value ( less than going rate) and punctuality are all rated at a level of 10. In addition to those ratings, he was also very respectful. This entire experience has been the perfect Mother's Day gift!!!

Central unit was getting frozen sometimes. And needed clean the coil. With the location of the closet it was hard to get to the coil. But he managed to clean with the small space given. He had to remove the vent which caused him extra work to go to attic and put back the vent tube. He did it all. Other companies refused to do the cleaning due to the location and extra labor to get the job done. But Roberto did it. And did a good job. He knows what he is doing and very knowledgeable. He also helped with other very hopeful information for my unique situation with my ac. Now I have access blowing well! I would definitely consider hiring him again when I have issues with my hvac. And would recommend to my friends to give him a chance.

I typically don't complete surveys but this one called for a review. J&G was nothing short of exceptional in their service, explanations and guidance. Patrick made me completely at ease, giving me clear direction on the process and developing a mutual trust between us so that I felt that I had worked with him for years. I cannot imagine working with any other team after this great repair of my coils that also earned me some savings, truly a gift of time, price, and service on the July 4th Holiday and all with the warm support of Gloria and their entire team. Thank you J&G!

Gary showed up exactly at the time he said he would. Even went out of his way to come by between appointments and didn't make me feel like I was a burden or that he was pressed for time. His prices aren't the cheapest but they are very very very fair for the level of expertise and workmanship that Hagen Mechanical Solutions provides. There are a lot of questionable, inexperienced folks in the HVAC world, but I can truly assure that Gary isn't one of them. Thanks again Gary for seeing me on such short notice and getting my problems solved! I now have an HVAC solution for all future problems (we all know there will be more, Texas heat will make sure of that)

I am recommending Washington A/C & Heating for all of your needs. A friend of mine told me to contact Mr. Washington after my A/C broke down in the middle of this 100 degree! I do not regret doing so. Mr. Washington was punctual and made a thorough explanation of what was going on with my A/C. He made his magic and here I can sleep well. He even followed up with a call to check if everything was running smooth! I am very grateful we have such professional technicians. I will refer him to all I know. Thank you Washington A/C & Heating for such great work!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
