Janelle B. says, "After dealing with some pretty terrible contractors in the past, working with John and his team at Renovation Houston was a breath of fresh air. They went above and beyond our expectations to remodel our kitchen, bathroom and wood floors, and we are so thrilled with the outcome! They even found a way to hang our 4 story chandelier when no other electrician could figure it out. The crew was punctual, respectful and dedicated. His tile guy, Lee, is the best there is. They worked with us on pricing and got the job done quick. With the quality and detail they put into our house, not only was their work well worth it, it added greater value to our home itself. We are so happy with the final results. It feels like a brand new house!!"See more

David E. says, "Highly recommend for custom carpentry and woodworking. My home was built in the 90’s, and one of the best ways I could cost effectively improve my living room was to have Southern Sawdust build a custom mantle. We decided to go with a solid, white oak wood and matte finish. Alexander came by the house for a visit to consult with me on the project and take measurements. The mantle was able to be built at the shop, and it was installed soon after. We are thrilled with the outcome, and consider it an investment in our home, giving it a more modern and appealing look. For anyone who wants a professional job done for your property, I would recommend talking with Alexander at Southern Sawdust."See more

Dean K. says, "My wife and I wanted to remodel our kitchen. Archer Pro was the fourth contractor we consulted and their explanation how the remodel would be done and their explanation of our options, caused us to select Archer Pro. Our house was built in the mid '70's and the kitchen we had, was pretty much the original kitchen. We had the entire lower counter demolished and a new counter built from ground up with a new granite counter top, tile back splash and all new appliances. Unlike the other contractors who were going to build cabinets, drawers and doors off site and merely install them, Archer Pro had a skilled carpenter on site to build a new counter top from ground up, complete with soft close drawers and cabinet doors, using quality lumber with poplar wood for the facing of the drawers and doors. New sink, new framed-in micro-wave, stove/oven, ducted evacuation fan and light above the stove, dish washer, and garbage disposal, all new, were installed. The cabinets above the counter were in good shape, so they were sanded, refurbished and new doors for all were made, so the doors for the upper cabinets matched the doors and drawers for the newly-built counter below. All wood was sanded, sealed, primed twice, sanded a second time and given two coats with a nice oil-based paint and a nice crown molding was installed all around the top of the new kitchen. The project was completed in a little under 3 weeks and my wife and I are totally pleased. I would not hesitate to use Archer Pro again for any future projects."See more

Nicky E. says, "My daughter and I hired Realtá Remodeling in November 2015 to make repairs to the interior and exterior of our home as we are preparing to sell it and we are so satisfied and impressed with Osman and his team that we are now having second thoughts about selling our home! The remodeling of our home was done absolutely perfectly and on time, everything that was listed in the contract was finished and Osman even made some touches to part of the house that were not included in the contract, which we were grateful for. We had work done to the majority of our house: Master restroom/bedroom (the shower was demolished, a new shower with tile was built, damaged sheetrock was repaired along with plumbing issues in the shower drain, countertops were refinished, leaks under the sinks were fixed, a hole in the bedroom wall was patched, the walls and ceiling were primed and painted and new carpet trim was installed.) Guest restroom (the bathtub was refinished, cabinets were replaced and new wood was installed under the sink where there was a leak, rotten baseboards were replaced.) Living/office/family/laundry room (the walls in each room were primed and painted, ceiling texture was perfectly matched, the wood frame of the windows were sanded, caulked, primed and painted, doors were replaced and painted, holes were patched.) Kitchen (countertops were refinished, new sink was installed, the walls and ceiling were primed and painted.) Exterior (rotten wood was replaced, metal was replaced and welded, both garage doors were replaced, rotten backyard siding was fixed, painting and priming were also done). We are so happy with Realtá Remodeling and Osman that we have referred him to numerous friends and family, my daughter and I highly recommend Realtá Remodeling if you are looking for an honest contractor who works hard to make you happy and follows through with the contract. Thank you Realtá Remodeling, Osman and your staff for making our remodeling process an easy one! "See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a good carpenter in Houston?

Search online to find the best carpenters in Houston. Depending on your project, you may need a custom cabinet maker, a framing contractor, or a trim or finish carpenter. For larger projects, you can even hire a general contractor who’ll be able to coordinate the work.

Before you hire, look for positive customer reviews and high ratings on their online profiles. Feel free to ask to see examples of the carpenter’s previous projects, and ask how long they’ve been in business. And don’t forget to compare prices among local pros by requesting cost estimates from at least three of them.

How do I hire the best general contractor in Houston?

You can find general contractors in Houston by searching online. Read reviews from past customers and look for photos of completed projects. You may also find information about their credentials on their profiles, or you can try verifying a general contractor’s license by visiting the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website.

Before you hire a contractor, ask for a cost estimate from several pros in Houston. Hiring a contractor to work on your home is an important decision, so feel free to take your time and compare quotes from a few pros.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
