David E. says, "Highly recommend for custom carpentry and woodworking. My home was built in the 90’s, and one of the best ways I could cost effectively improve my living room was to have Southern Sawdust build a custom mantle. We decided to go with a solid, white oak wood and matte finish. Alexander came by the house for a visit to consult with me on the project and take measurements. The mantle was able to be built at the shop, and it was installed soon after. We are thrilled with the outcome, and consider it an investment in our home, giving it a more modern and appealing look. For anyone who wants a professional job done for your property, I would recommend talking with Alexander at Southern Sawdust."See more

Bill J. says, "RESPONSE TO THUMBTACK (10-20-22): Ernesto Urdaneta (Network Construction Company) first contacted me and received a brief description of the job at hand. The dimensions, wall surface condition, furniture movement, type of paint to be applied, et al were discussed. The painter then explained about his past experiences and references– I was impressed. His communication skills were professional and appropriate. All of my questions were answered well. After the painter examined the job site, the paint type, color and texture were discussed. Also the actual areas to be painted were reviewed. The time and costs of the job were discussed and a mutual agreement was reached. The painter was flexible with his paint-job schedule. The total painting of multiple rooms with different types of paint was accomplished in about 3-days without any problems. The work site was kept in an orderly, tidy, and very clean condition. I was very pleased with his work-product and would totally recommend Mr. Urdaneta and his fellow workers. In the future (~ 3-4 months) I have several more jobs to schedule– I expect to discuss these with Ernesto. Bill Janese (77069)"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a good carpenter in Houston?

Search online to find the best carpenters in Houston. Depending on your project, you may need a custom cabinet maker, a framing contractor, or a trim or finish carpenter. For larger projects, you can even hire a general contractor who’ll be able to coordinate the work.

Before you hire, look for positive customer reviews and high ratings on their online profiles. Feel free to ask to see examples of the carpenter’s previous projects, and ask how long they’ve been in business. And don’t forget to compare prices among local pros by requesting cost estimates from at least three of them.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
