The #1 advice I would give to a customer looking to hire an event photographer is to meet with several and choose one that you feel really comfortable with. The more comfortable you feel with your photographer, the better your event photos turn out. For portraits, look for up-to-date photos and try to figure out if the photographer's style is in line with your own style. If it is, you are far more likely to love your photos. Also, a photographer who constantly updates their photos is one who is proud of their work, so it's generally a good sign.
