Kevin came to our office to help verify that we could install a portable dishwasher in our kitchen. He was very friendly and not only gave us the go ahead to install, but also gave us tips for installation in case we decide to do it ourselves. I'd recommend Kevin!

Excellent job! Very professional and had great attention to detail. He hung an entire house of window blinds into a block home and also fixed the leaking water valve under the kitchen sink. I plan on hiring again for fixture replacement and custom closet build out.

ACA upgraded our home theater and whole house audio. Chris and Dana were great to work with providing excellent technical and design advise. They really spent a lot of time to understand our needs, and were very flexible through the process to help us understand options and get us exactly what we wanted. We couldn't be happier with the job and the service. I highly recommend ACA.

Whole house interior painting including popcorn ceiling removal as well as painting kitchen cabinets. Good and efficient crew with reasonable pricing. Ms. Ross, the owner has design background and excellent advice on what works well in color selections. Very good attention to detail. In addition to painting, she produced a very competitive bid for tiling ~740 sq feet 12x24 of floor tiles. The tiling crew she provided installed the tile first with good preparation then installed tiles with very fine grout lines as requested. Overall, very impressed and would hire again for future work.

They removed my tile from my kitchen and entrance way and set new tile. Also tiled my spare bathroom and laundry room which had linoleum. Very friendly, the floor looks great. I supplied all the materials and they supplied the labor. Now that I know they can do good work I will have many other jobs I need done. Mario checked up regularly on the work and his price was fair. To be balanced, one thing i would suggest is that they slow down and be a little more thorough with the grouting. They do go back at the end to make sure everything is good though and correct problems.

Let me start off by saying that these guys are extremely hard workers! Not only were they very responsible but also very punctual. They painted my entire home interior followed by adding new cabinets,a new kitchen sink, removed existing backsplash and adding a new modern one. I HIGHLY recommend them! They did the project in a matter of days and were very clean and most important they worked with my budget! I will definitely hire them again for my upcoming projects!

We loved Kirk from the beginning when he first arrived to give us an estimate. Him and his team made our kitchen look beautiful. We had a super out dated kitchen and we are in love with the remodel. He communicated well and payed attention details.

Shelley is the best! Shelley has been our designer/decorator/project manager for as long as I can remember. My business flips houses and does vacation rental properties, so Shelly helps us with picking out design finishes, stages houses to be sold, and completely furnishes houses for high-end upscale vacation rentals. Whether the goal is to go very high-end, or if you are looking for an expensive look on a two dollar budget, Shelly knows all of the best places to get great stuff at very expensive rates.

Amazed and thrilled with the way my condo turned out thanks to Craig. This was my first experiance working with an interior designer. I bought a small condo and he really helped make the space work with just the right furniture, colors and window treatments. With the luxury look he gave me he still came under budget. It was very enjoyable working with him, not only did I learn a lot from the designing process but he created exactly the atmosphere that I was looking for my space and now I just love being in my home. Thank you so much Craig!!

Chris helped me restore my 1965 vintage camper and did an INCREDIBLE job!! From the gutting, to the walls, to the electrical, plumbing, custom cabinets, the bed, closet, kitchen, custom butcher block countertops, there is nothing he can't do! I was so pleased with the finish product that so exceeded my expectations! So attention to detail and perhaps the thing that set him apart was his use space and managing my expectations. We had a few set backs on the build, but Chris was communicative and fair. The best part was how affordable and fair he was. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! 5 stars!

I have used Bob Zirpoli twice for kitchen remodeling. He does excellent work at a fair price. Once, using our ideas, pictures and drawings he completely reworked the kitchen. We replaced the cabinets, counter tops and appliances to totally update the kitchen. The kitchen turned out beautiful! On another project, we added additional cabinets and replaced a few solid doors with glass to update the kitchen. I would do business with Bob again!

Brandon and his crew were amazing. They were willing and eager for us to purchase or direct them in getting all the fixtures we wanted for our bathrooms, unlike the other big company policies. They totally gutted both of our bathrooms at our ranch and treated our project like it was their own home remodel. They had no problem with us changing our mind on some design and finish out aspects, being patient and attentive to trying to please us. They have a great work ethic, staying focused, even cleaning up every night before they leave. We are looking forward to having them be a part of our major kitchen addition and remodel in the fall.

Bath shower combo converted to shower. Interviewed 4 contractors and MD's was the best and easiest with added benefit of design help from Kenneth's wife Tiffany. Beautiful work, done on time, and Kenneth is a reliable surprisingly prompt communicator which I appreciated enormously.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
