I typically don't complete surveys but this one called for a review. J&G was nothing short of exceptional in their service, explanations and guidance. Patrick made me completely at ease, giving me clear direction on the process and developing a mutual trust between us so that I felt that I had worked with him for years. I cannot imagine working with any other team after this great repair of my coils that also earned me some savings, truly a gift of time, price, and service on the July 4th Holiday and all with the warm support of Gloria and their entire team. Thank you J&G!

I would give them zero stars if possible. Super unethical... "Integrity" is a joke and sadly what I've come to expect from these companies. For more context, initial response to my project "Hello.God bless. No service fee, No trip fee. Because of the summer special ,we come out at no cost and give you a free diagnostic on your system ,even if you decide to not get a repair the same day. We find the problem, and explain the problem and cost to repair or replace, then you decide from there." When I follow up, I receive the following, "I can put you on schedule. It will be $19.99 summer special to come over and run a diagnostic". So went from free to $20. When I highlight to them his initial response, he responds with "If you get the problem resolved the same day it will be a free diagnostic. We will bypass it" even though his first response stated "Free diagnostic on your system ,even if you decide to not get a repair the same day. " What a joke. This is even before any work has been done, so I can't even imagine what they will try to pool once they win the project.

My AC fan was continuously running and would not turn off. I had been told by another company that I needed to replace my entire system. I contacted Hagen Mechanical Solutions and Gary Hagen came by my house on Sunday and found the problem immediately. He was very thorough in his inspection of my system and he quickly and efficiently determined that my furnace control board needed to be replaced and that I did not need to spend $5800 for a new system, but could replace the control for $400. Gary was very professional and even checked out my other system and my thermostat which I had recently replaced. I appreciate his honesty and quick response to my problem by coming by on the weekend. I am very happy to have found a reliable and trust worthy company to service my AC units. They will also be doing tune ups on both my systems. Thank you Hagen Mechanical Solutions!!

I hired this company to replace my blower motor and capacitor for the motor. Mr. Riojas made sure to explain what components he tested and which ones he thought would be needed to complete the job. He was mindful to show me what parts were damaged and what it meant for my furnace. Even though he did not have the parts to repair my unit on hand and couldn't get any that day (it was a Saturday morning and the supply stores close early), he informed me of the expected labor and parts costs. After my string of somewhat overpriced and somewhat lackadaisical visits from other AC technicians, Mr. Riojas' professionalism and straightforward pricing and explanations were a welcome change. So far so good. I may have an update after I'm able to test the unit. I'll probably be hiring Riojas to complete the work.

We had S.O.S. Aire come out to our house to look at what we thought needed fixed. After they came out and had a look they told us everything was in order. no repairs needed. How awesome is that!! They didn't try to take advantage of the the situation and didn't even charge for the trip out to the house. I will definitely add them to my important number list. Thank you so much.

The best and most HONEST company yet. All of the "big names" were quoting me repair costs of thousands of dollars and a need to replace the entire ac system. $450 later, my house is an icebox. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You will forever have my family's business.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
