Mc Jones quickly and correctly fixed my door, which was the job, but in the process talked with us about other potential handyman jobs. He was knowledgable and gave us a great appraisal for a kitchen remodel. I will comment again after that job is done. Highly recommended.

Very pleased with the quality of work performed by David Carranza and his staff. I had him redo flooring and install tile for my mother's home. He gave me the exact estimate with no hidden surprises. If there was any additional work David will go over what option would fit best with my approval. A true professional and honest person. I ended up hiring David to work on my home the following week on various projects. He completed a stand up shower in my master bedroom and redid my other bathroom with flooring and backsplash. In addition he installed French doors and replaced my sliding doors. Needless to say I was very comfortable and extremely happy with his work. I will continue to utilize his services and he will get my referral whenever anyone mentions the type of services he performs.

Queta gave us a reasonable quote, and was willing to do extra items like trim trees over the roof. We had loads of questions and Henry answered every one of them without hesitation. They were very professional and did a very nice job. We will certainly use Queta for other home repair and remodeling services in the future. They are A+.

Work done: bathroom remodel How long it lasted: approximately one month What went well: Marco and crew were very receptive to feedback and made all necessary adjustments in a timely manner. Worked full days. Kept the area outside the remodel clean and were trustworthy. What could have been better: A more accurate estimate about how long items ordered take to arrive would have been helpful in completing the process quicker. Everything took longer than initial estimate. More attention to detail in tile work, but it is possible that my expectations may be a little high. Final thoughts: Work done was above average, and the price was competitive. I would use Sellmark for future projects. Recommendations to homeowners considering a remodel: Personally call vendors to find out how long items take to arrive and include the question when is your next appointment time for measuring if that is applicable. Make sure subcontractors are willing to work with each other in coordinating deliveries and installation. I experienced difficulty with cabinet delivery and counter installation contractors working together. This had nothing to do with Marco...just a suggestion! And lastly if the time estimate is two weeks for a project mentally prepare for that to be twice as long unless the job has very few moving parts!

Bob is an incredible craftsman, an extremely clean and quiet worker, and most importantly, an honest, great guy. Bob did all our tiling and flooring, as well as wall work and various other renovation tasks. We had tile flooring put in throughout our house to replace the tile that had been there for years, and Bob exceeded our expectations with his fantastic work. We felt comfortable leaving our home in Bob's hands when we were at work, and our animals loved having him around. We still look at our new floors in amazement, so happy that they came out so well. Bob takes the time that is necessary to do a job completely and correctly, and won't make you feel like most contractors who always seem to be in a rush. We cannot recommend him enough, and look forward to getting on his list when we have more money to make further updates in our home.

Consumer Alert If Kenneth Keever contacts you for any reason, please contact the authorities. He is a thief and a con artist. He will give you a free quote and ask you for money for material and supplies, which he has no plans on purchasing. He has a warrant in Indiana for the same crime. He also has a warrant in Comal County, Texas for this crime as well. He is now targeting Bexar County residences and has taken advantage of 8 people, with dollar amounts ranging from $3000 to $40,000. Some of his victims are elderly, disabled vets, and on fixed incomes. Even Priya Sridhar from KENS 5 TV has done a story on this lying thief. Here’s the link to her article and the news video, You can also contact Mrs. Sridhar, who can put you in touch with Ken Keevers victims who are working with an attorney to file a law suit against Keever, and she can put you in touch with the Bexar County detectives that are working on bring felony charges against him and his accomplice Javier Sanchez. Mr. Keever’s is very deceptive and may use the name of other company’s like SK Designs, American Designs, and Richmark Construction or use his accomplice Javier Sanchez as the owner of the company. The contractors license number is a fraud and he may use the following addresses as his so called office address, 119 Biering Ave SA, TX 78210 or 8611 Data Point, Apt 66 SA, TX 78229 or The Bank of America Plaza building downtown suite 1330. Ken Keever and his team are a parasite on the community and he need’s to be stopped, not just because he’s stealing money, but because of the disruption and turmoil he brings into people’s homes and lives, causing an undo financial burden, arguments between spouses, and if you are a disabled veteran like me, your left with two demolished bathrooms, with no handicap access or financial means to rebuild the destruction Ken Keever has left behind.

Richard with (Gamboa Contracting) did an excellent job on our 4-plex apartment that needed remodeled. We (PIMAF Group) had a fire on two apartments at the 4-plex located (Meadow Field, SA,Tx). We had the 4-plex completly remodel with new wiring, Ac units,Etc. Richard bid was not the cheapest but he came recommended and we did not want to spend money on a bad contractor. Richard is a Licensed Electrical Contractor a Mechanical Contractor and Commercial Contractor with the city of San Antonio. He made sure all trade permits were taken out and dealt with all the city Inspectors. He also obtain release leins from all contractors at end of the job. I highly recomend Richard as a contractor if you want your job and money done right. We will be given him another job on our next project in about 6 months. Arlene Vallejo

Susan was everything that contractors in San Antonio have stopped being. She was prompt. She showed up when she said she would. When she got delayed, she would communicate - in plenty of time. She gave a great value. Her work was competitively priced and superbly done. She was accurate. She said the job would take 5 days. I assumed 2 weeks. It took 4 1/2 days. Her crew was superb. They respected our time, our home and our life. They wouldn't get us out of bed in the morning or disturb our breakfast, but you could set your clocks by their 9 a.m. start time. Then they would work until sunset. That's how the job took 4 1/2 days. It was 12-hour days. They cleaned up the job site...every day! I'm not sure why they cleaned up at 9 at night, but they did. It was just one more way they showed respect. When I took out my recycling or picked up the paper. My porches and yards were clean. We have an old (1945), highly stylized home, with three porches that needed rebuilding. They now look better than new and I am looking to our next remodeling job!

Arthur with Resurrection General Contractors was my point of contact for my roofing project. It's not often I write a review or share my thought but when you have a company that delivers on their promise 100% I would recommend them. Arthur was very professional and went out of his way to ensure my needs were met. My roof and soffits are straighter than they ever have been. In addition Arthur was able to provide competitive bids on replacement windows and I'm looking forward to having them replaced next week. Thanks again for all your help! Best regards, Dena

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
