I’ve been taking Germanlessons with Dr. Wolfgang Soldan for several years now, and honestly, he’s the real deal. He has figured me out and really understands how I learn and tailors his methods to meet my needs. He figures out what works for you and runs with it. Makes every lesson actually stick and fun too.
I also want to say that Wolfgang turns everything into a chance to learn. You say “Guten Morgen” and next thing you know you’re talking about vocabulary, how people actually pronounce it in different parts of Germany, a little grammar, some culture, the whole nine yards. We end up chatting about German traditions, history, what’s going on in the news, everyday stuff… even my own life sometimes. It never feels like you’re just grinding through a textbook. The language actually feels useful, you know?
He’s super sharp, always on time (German punctuality), reliable, and professional, but the lessons still feel relaxed and fun. He’ll correct you when you mess up, but he does it clear and patient — never makes you feel dumb. And he knows exactly when to push you a little further than you’re comfortable with, which is how you (well I for sure) actually get better.
Wolfgang’s just a great teacher who genuinely cares if you’re improving. After all this time I look at him as both my instructor and a friend. If you’re looking for a solid German teacher, I recommend him without any hesitation. You are not just buying an hour of instruction, you are getting time with someone who generally loves what he does and wants you to learn and will answer every and any question you have. My high school son has been taking lessons from Wolfgang for quite a while now. According to my son:

He comes prepared for each lesson but is flexible and will adjust the lesson if there’s a knowledge gap or something you personally want to learn about. He provides other resources to help when needed. He’s professional but easy to get along with, and he gets to know you and remembers things you’ve mentioned in the past.”

Wolfgang has been tutoring my high school age son in German Language in support of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Over two months, my son has gain understanding and confidence in German. Wolfgang is great at explaining the intricacies of the German language and is happy to field any and all questions. His deep and thorough understanding of both German and English language mechanics help him to relate German to native English speakers. He is easy to work with and has an easy personality. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
The price is based on an hour (60 minutes). Of course, depending on the customer's interest, there can be online sessions of 45 minutes, or 90 minutes, etc.
Unless the customer has special wishes (e.g. extensive preparations for the online classes) the price is $60 per online session of 60 minutes.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First of all, I listen carefully, very carefully. I believe it is essential for an excellent job to know precisely what my client wants to accomplish. Understanding this is the prerequisite to giving good advice, guidance, and a strategy to follow to reach these goals. There will be a permanent interaction between my client and myself to monitor the progress, eventually speed up the tempo, or, if necessary, slow down.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My entire professional life, I have been teaching languages. In Germany, it was mainly English; in the United States, German, English, and English as a Second Language. I graduated from Humboldt University in Berlin (Germany) with an M.A. in English/ESL. In the United States, I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with an M.A. in German language, culture, and history. I was awarded a Ph.D. degree from LaSalle University in Education.
